318i are sadly well known of roil leaks/usage. The vac pump's worth a check (its hidden right at the back and can be difficult to see) the rocker cover's another area worth checking for leaks, when these get back the oil will find its way on to the manifold and eventually you'll smell oil through the vents.
Also worth checking the oil filter housing for leaks and this is ath the front of the engine if its sweating then its leaking(usually the internal gasket) But my No1 gut feeling re your issue will be the breathers knackerd. Simple check would be to start the car lift the bonnet undo the oil filler cap if it feels like its sucking like mad then thre's your answer, also the underside of the cap will help as well as if this is got a mayo effect on the underside then there's your issue I've said its common essentually your cars burning its own oil, most people repalce the breather and ignore the pipes DON'T. I suspect your running the N46 unit below is a picture of the breather and assocated pipe work http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E9...oil_separator/ When the breathers get bad the cars behaviour becomes an issue with erratic stalling behaviour but the tell tale sign usually is smoke when pulling away after standing still for a while. |

Steve vacuum pump and crankcase breather and pipes were done last year, vacuum pump seal was done around fen and the crankcase breather and pipes were done in October.there is no mayo around the oil cap, will take the cap off and check when it is running later.

As mentioned above, check the oil filter housing if you have not done so already. I had similar loss of oil, and the gasket between the filter housing and the block had gone. Filter housing is at the front of the engine, at the top (if the same as the 330i).
If the gasket is gone, there are two on the housing, filter to the housing, and housing to block, if I recall correctly, may as well replace both. Otherwise, good luck with what BMW can find.
