Question about cluster swap

Hey so my buddies 2008 328ix drive got totaled last week. before they sent it off to the junkyard we grabbed some stuff out of it that was still in good condition, i grabbed the speedo. I have a 2008 335i and the led light behind my gas cluster is out and was going to send it out to the forum member who swaps out the LED's to white lights instead of just replacing boring orange. My question is, can i plug and play his speedo in mine in the interim of waiting to get my speedo back from the member. I have heard you need to have it coded and the vin stays married to the cluster itself and it could f up my ECU. Any input or past experience on this situation.

have u had experience with this, i had two bmw dealers recommend not to do it and one told me it could cause ECU issues. Like i said it would only be for a couple of days and then i would put this speedo up for sale but in the mean time i need something to use for daily driving.

You actually want to make sure you dont code it to your car. I wont get into details but just plug it in and you'll be fine.

Yup, as others said - just plug it in and go - don't code anything...

Actually, you can drive the car without the cluster & it would be fine - you just wouldn't know exactly how fast you're going

Ok just to thread hijack here,

"if" I was to buy an M3 cluster and have it coded to my car, and say it all works blah blah blah,

I do 20k miles and keep it in the car for a few years,
Then I sell or trade the car,
Could I just put my old original cluster back in and it would update to the new mileage and be ok?
Or would my original cluster then need to be re-coded?

I'm thinking of doing an M3 cluster swap

Cool

and it doesn't matter with M3 clusters if it manual or DCT right?
The lights won't work anyway from what I've read

Why?

It's one of the best improvements I did to my interior. Here's mine:
