2010 335d CEL, BMW saying DEF/SCR related parts not covered by CA emission warranty
My 2010 with 51000 miles has had CEL on intermittently now for the past 2 months. Car is now a the dealer claiming the following part numbers are broken and are not covered under BMW CA emissions warranty:
16197204753 16197227394 I looked up the parts and they seem to be related to the SCR pump unit. Since when is BMW denying SCR pump units under CA emission warranty? Dealer wants $2200 for the fix. Telling me the truth? I called BMW NA customer relations and they've basically said only the dealer can deal with BMW warranty dept to get this covered. Does anyone else have any further recourse on this? Of course, if I decide to give up and take my car home and then take it to another dealer, I'll be on the hook for $150 in diagnostic fees. If I do find a friendlier dealer who gets BMW to cover the said broken parts, will I be reimbursed? Very frustrated, should've gotten a 335i!

I would take a look at this post and read the attached PDF, specifically page 42.

Unfortunately this part is not covered under the CA emissions warranty. I just got off the phone with another dealer's service guy who confirmed this. So if you don't have extended/cpo warranty you're SOL if these parts break. Since I'm in a smog testing county and can't get rid of the god-forsaken urea/egr/dpf system, I'll just have to eat the $2200 charge and dump this car afterwards. So for those on the fence about extended warranty... It's mandatory if you want to keep this car. Otherwise, sell it before your warranty runs out....

Those are computers integral to the emissions system, shouldnt they be covered under the federal 8/80k warranty? "ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (INCLUDINGONBOARD DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM)" is covered under that

That's a given for any German car my friend. I didn't hesitate to buy mine and didn't bother with the extended "maintenance" warranty.

It's parts 19 & 8 in the diagram. The DEF tank is shaded above in the pic. This car definitely was engineered as an afterthought by BMW for the NA market. After almost 13 years of BMW ownership, I'm abandoning this brand after the flippant attitude I was given when calling BMWNA to complain how these parts aren't covered when the very existence of this system is because of CA emission standards so they should be covered under the CA emissions warranty! ![]()

Save yourself the 2200 and get a stage 1 flash from jarek. That's the best advice I can give.

Those parts are $71 each. Do you know what the cel is for? Almost sounds like they're giving you the price for them to replace the tank and telling you its some parts that arent covered under the warranty. Either way, $2200 to replace $140 worth of parts seems sketchy

Urea tank
I just got an SES light. Took my 2010 in and much to my surprise my entire urea tank had to be replaced under warranty due to a faulty valve. My SA is a great guy and I think he recognizes that the more comprehensive repairs done under CPO warranty the fewer headaches when all of our cars finally roll off their extended warranty. My car has 68K and aside from the crappy transmission mapping, I love the car. By the way, the SA I deal with is someone I seek out whenever I bring it in. Several of his colleagues are tools that love to say "no".

dont forget there is a minority of owners here who like to turn their own wrenches and have wholesale parts contacts, so "manditory warranty" doesnt really universally apply. ![]() |

If I had bought an extended warranty I would have been taken to the cleaners. I replaced literally not a single thing between 50k and 100k aside from lubes and filters.

Purchased a 2010 33D with just over 100k miles. Car was owned by a certified diesel mechanic who worked for CA government Ag. Anyway car was extremely clean, no codes before and after drive. Huge stack of maintenance records. Long story short when I bought the car the guy tried to put the engine cover on and hit the radiator hose. Broke a nipple and coolant everywhere.
Drove the car home no issues (plugged the nipple with rubber plug, auto zone had no parts) next day I drove and the check engine light came on, soon after the alert for engine malfunction came on so I lost most power. All the forums I'm reading are saying bad egr system, but it was changed last month... Waiting for replacement radiator hose to come in, but does this broken piece really make the engine go bananas like this? ![]() P.S there is no signs of vacuum leaks or turbo dmg at all. Any suggestions?? |

This may be already talked about here However it is worth noting SI B18 05 12 dated March 2013 In the paperwork it clearly says warranty information The Repair described in this bulletin is covered under warranty regardless of time or mileage My BMW dealer also would not repair mine back in 2017 didn’t even mention this service bulletin they had a recall from 2013 that they knew about that they did not elect to use My car was produced 7/2010 And is within the window of time of listed for the recall campaign |
