Noisy Lifters I believe, happens to mine to something to do with low oil pressure at idle and our lifters being hydraulically based. I wouldn't worry, first time I heard it was the drive through. When you rev does it go away?

You'll be fine. Theres nothing that links this issue to any kind of engine damage or engine breakdown as of yet. Mine is intermittent its happened like 3 times since I've owned the car. Just drive and don't worry about it, these engines are full of weird noises.

That is quite common. It may be related to cam bearing ledges but if it is and it gets bad you'll get a code and will need to take the valve cover off to replace them. Cam bearing ledges are a very common issue on the N54 with mileage. BMW's changed the part number on the small rectangring that relates to oil pressure doing VANOS control.

Take a look here for a DIY:

You probably meant: Cam bearing ledges are NOT a very common issue!
mainly because cam bearing ledges noise doesn't go away when reeving and usually implies codes.

@EvlShiftrE92: I would do an oil sample analysis just to make sure nothing else is going on.

I have the same noise. If i drive spirited it goes away but it comes back as soon as I drive in stop an go traffic the day before.
There's a procedure around here about how to get air free oil on those lifters but i cant find it now.

I think there's an updated head for N54 but it doesn't fixes the issue.

It is oil viscosity/temp related which will make the issue more pronounced at cold start than once warm. Cam bearing ledge wear is indeed quite common with higher mileage N54s.

Once you start getting 2A82 codes and it doesn't go away with VANOS solenoid replacement you know where to look next

on the other hand... Idling your cold engine for 20 minutes is probably the worst thing you can do.

ive had this same exact sound. dealer replaced solenoid on one of my turbos and said it was getting stuck. the tech said he used a stethoscope and heard it. it didn't affect drivability at all or throw any codes.. the problem is now fixed

i would usually hear it when the car is fully warmed up after a drive as i let the car idle. it would sound for about 10 sec and go away on its own or if i blip the throttle. other ppl on the forum say its a noisy evap valve or something of that sort and not to worry. it sounds nasty though.

is the part called evap solenoid? is it normal or does it need repair? dealer just replaced mine and said it was turbo solenoid. i was thinking boost solenoid but doesn't seem like it.
