next car - F30 328i or 330d?
I think it'll soon be time to change my e92 335i for a saloon. I'm looking at spending upto £20k on either the 328i or 330d. They're both very similar in terms of power but what are the 2 like to drive and am I right in thinking I probably wouldn't gain much from the extra mpg of the diesel considering I do about 10k miles/year (DPF problems) and it would come with a higher insurance premium?
I was also looking at the A4 2L petrols but they seem to have lots of issues with burning oil++. Anything else similar worth taking a look at? |

10k a year doesn't justify a diesel at all. Like you say all those short trips will put you in danger of DPF issues.
Surprised to see F30 cars as cheap as they are now. There is some good value cars around the £20k mark which surprised me. The 328i look a good car on paper, but you'll miss the extra 2 cylinders, refinement and the extra power. Owners also say it falls well short of the claimed fuel consumption. |

I only do 10k a year and pretty much all short journeys and over the last 6 years ive had diesels no problems at all.
I cant see you getting an f30 330d unless your buying an se basic model for 20k. Not sure about the 328i but i know the new 330d is a very quick car, i would personally miss the torque round town if i ever went back to a petrol car now.

What's the reason for the change?
I don't see either as been an upgrade from an E90 335i, infact judging by the reviews I would say they would be both worse drivers cars due to the electric steering on the F30. If just fancy a change, I would spent some cash getting the NBT retrofit, and put the rest of the cash away till BMW release the LCI 340i. |

my mum does 10k a year in her diesel. 9 miles each way to work and hardly goes out on weekend an evenings and shes had diesel for the last 10 yearss - car hasnt had any problems at all - just turbo a few years back and she averages 34/35mpg. if she had 328i no doubt it will be mid 20's max so you will save money on fuel

TBH, I don't really use the power of the 335i and I could do with swapping the coupe for a saloon.
cheapest 328i currently on autotrader is £15k, although all the cheap ones seem to be in white which I don't really fancy much: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...01502181048092 Looking at £21k in blue + a few extras: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...01501200291683 or 330d for £22k: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...01411209124930 starting to lean towards the diesel now... |

328i looks good.
Been thinking that would be the route I would probably go in future for same reasons of low miles & short journeys. Be interesting seeing what its like coming from my 330i as essentially this was the replacement power plant. |

I do 26 miles a day for work commute and I'm in a 335D. Conscious that yes it's a diesel but if well maintained and what have you, I see there being little to no issue. If you can take it out for a good run on the motorway alteast once a week then that'll help with the DPF threats.
Or you can gut out the DPF and win win. |
