I'm not great at keeping the fuel tank filled up, this was my 335i the other night on the way home from work, playing petrol station roulette!

LOL. Don't actually let it ever get that low because if it did and I got stuck, it's a bitch of a hassle. Whenever it needs filling up dude LOL.

With the older diesels you need to crack the fuel lines to relieve the lock that occurs. Had to do it a couple of times after changing the fuel filter on an old mk4 Golf diesel my sister in law has. Me, I usually fill up with 20-25 miles left on the range. |

I heard that if you let the diesel run out completely, you can get air in the high pressure fuel lines and it can mess it up. This could be completely rubbish, but jut something I heard.
On the other hand, Old Grey Steve advised me to refuel when the tank gets to about 1/4 left to ensure best functionality. He knows his stuff so I now follow that advice! |

I always fill up at 1/4. Always have done. I don't see the point in postponing the inevitable, and running it that low only makes the next fuel fill up cost hideous.
The only time I'll run any car on fumes is if it's a hire car and the agreement was that I can bring it back empty. |

if you run your fuel really low you can pick up the crap that settles in the bottom of the tank and it can clog filters etc - so I've heard, never happened to me.

When I test drove mine the clock said 10 miles to go, got back and bought the car and asked them to put some diesel in when I picked it up. Following week I was driving it home from the dealer, just got onto the road and noticed that there were 2 miles left, but I had seen an Esso station down the road so thought I would be OK. As I was c100 yards from the station the clock said 0. 50 yards later it said _ _ _. Just got to the pump and filled it up.
Might be me, but it seemed to idle "lumpy" for the next few thousand miles, slowly getting better. |

I got my CLK55 down to about 2 before (circa 21 mpg) on an unfamiliar stretch of motorway caused by a diversion off my normal road (which was before the garage I was planning to stop at). This was pretty late at night too. Then the exit to another garage was within some roadworks on the unfamiliar road and closed off..... Very concerning.
I was actually drafting behind a truck for the last 10 miles or so with air-con/heater turned off :-/ Usually I try and keep my 335d at least above 50 to go. |

Never try to let mine get below 1/4 to 1/8th of a tank. Like others say it feels psychologically better not to do big fill ups. |
