In need of some help
Hi guys, new to the forums here and probably not starting on a good note with the first post but this is the best group I figured I would ask for some help. i recently purchased a 2007 335XI Automatic. Love the car and got it for a great price. It currently has 52k miles on it. I have three main issues right now and wondering if they are all related or if they are separate problems.
Issue 1: Its not that bad but after I purchased the car and drove it about 5k miles I noticed that it would stutter but only when I was cruising at about 2500 RPMS and would go to pass someone on the highway. I would give it some gas and it jump for a split second before going. Felt like something a spark plug or ignition coil would do but I wasn't quite sure and since it didn't happen too often I looked past it for the time being. No check engine light ever Issue 2: Yesterday I was on my way home form work about 5 miles away going up a hill on the highway when the car began feeling like it lost power or was being weighed down. The strange thing was that it was fine in lower RPMS but when it got to 2500-3000 RPMS it would get that strange feeling of bogging down and it would not pass 3000 rpms, it almost felt like it should shift there but wouldn't go up a gear. Never experienced anything like this in any car. When I parked the car I would rev it and it would pass 3000 RPMS fine. No check engine light ever. Issue 3: Right when I arrived home after issue 2 started happening I put the car in park and noticed a really loud noise coming from under the hood. The cooling fan was on full bore and was EXTREMELY loud. I shut it off for the night and when I woke up in the morning it fired right up, I waited and about 1 minute after starting the car the fan once again began going insane like the car was over heating even after a cold start. No check engine light ever. Are these three issues connected? and what are they? Im thinking tstat and /or water pump? I know they have never been replaced. Im at a loss here where to really start. Any help is appreciated |

Sounds odd.
If you're not getting any check engine light triggered then it should not be misfiring because that triggers the light. Given what has happened, it does sound like something could be going on with the cooling system/thermostat/water pump. I would start by checking all your fluids, make sure they're topped up and are in good health. Maybe your coolant is low/really old? Definitely could be that your water pump is on its way out or something. Did you get any lights at all on the car? Do you have access to scan the codes with INPA or something better than just a regular OBD2 scanner. |

Scan codes, check air filter, clean maf.....all new fluid as previous poster mentioned, you may be due for a walnut blast, but the codes are what should point you to the problems.
This should give you a good idea of what some of your issues are. |

2. Possibly a tranny issue, as other members said do fluid(sorry not to sure about this one) 3. Thermostat and water pump are likely on their way out, look into that asap because that will leave you stranded, could also be a fuse or something. Finally take it to an Indy as there.might be ghost codes Just my .05 good luck sorting everything out! |

Thank you for the help! Ill be looking into tomorrow and seeing what I can find. I used to own an Audi A6 and issue 1 feels just like my audi every time it would need an ignition coil or spark plug done. Ill let you guys know what I find out tomorrow! Thanks

Check for tstat or wp codes. And n54 has 2 map sensors, you can spray down w maf sensor cleaner, but not likely your issue.
Did the previous owner do a walnut blast? If not you are overdue.

I would suspect the thermostat is the culprit

There is no MAF sensor, Mass Air Flow. There are two MAP sensors, Manifold absolute pressure. One in the intake manifold and one before the Throttle body on the charge pipe which also has a "T" for temperature (IIRC). Quote:

Coolant level was low and I topped it off. I just replaced the coolant temp sensor about 30 minutes ago. Still the same issue used a Centech OBD/EOBD +ABS to read codes. All I got was P316A (don't know what it is) saw elsewhere that it is a code for "Engine Coolant Temperature Signal Stuck High." which would explain the fan. Reset the code and the car cold starts and fan kicks on the same way

Since I drive a lot for work and plan on traveling a lot this summer Im just going to go ahead and do my water pump and thermostat anyway. If anyone knows what might be causing the fan to go on in overdrive please let me know incase the water pump and thermostat don't fix it

Is the car otherwise stock or is there a tune on the vehicle? I ask because sometimes with tunes it can get a little glitched out. So I always recommend customers to uninstall the tune and re-install or if you have a tune like JB4 then upgrade the firmware and reset adaptations.
If the problems persist it may be an indication of a failed water pump. |

There is a setting on the JB4 called 'maxcool' perhaps that is turned on?
it causes the rad fan to run at max full time and also ups the speed on the water pump to help keep things cool. Check that maybe? I believe there are only OEM options for the water pump & thermostat, water pump is not that cheap. |
