Yanked my intake today (cbu & egr questions)

Knocked out re-sealing my red boost pipe today (with the Yozh twin upper seal mod) and decided to pull my intake

Any Idea what caused this mess below my turbos? Leaking egr pipe maybe?

Is there a bolt and bracket missing on my turbo output flange? There is one on the backside of the flange.

Now the the CBU:
What would you guys recommend. I'm at 60k with a cpo warranty for another 40k/2 years. Leave it alone, let i clog and get it fixed under warranty? Block it off and go water meth injection or you can't tell without looking in the head?

Surprisingly some cylinders have it worse than others.. nothing over 1/8" though.

I have heard reports that water/meth injection cleaned it up in a couple thousand miles. Have not seen any before and after though.

That CBU is not quite as bad as mine. Since you have the intake off,
send that out to be hot tanked. Give the EGR and throttle a quick cleaning.

The official BMW cleaning method says not to use walnut blasting on the
part of the intake tract that goes through the valve cover. So how to
clean it? I used a 2-step process, starting with a clay carving tool, then
finishing today with an acetone wash. My photos show the clay tool. For the Acetone, I just got a quart from Home Depot, and a bag of terrycloth
rags. Cut the rags into ~5" squares, then soak in acetone. I used a small steel bowl. The key tool to get down in the port and scrub is a medical tool, a 9" sponge forcep, like http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BLS0Q4U?psc=1

Grab the acetone-soaked terry cloth square in the forcep and lock it in.
Jamb the assembly down the port and let it soak for minute or so. Rotate
quickly and pull out slowly. It will be filthy. Repeat until the cloths come out clean. Not hard, but tedious.

With the intake looking like that you have many miles to go before it'll throw a code. Mine looked much worse and the DDE didn't throw a code. You're probably best off with blocking off the EGR, sending the intake for hot tank/ultrasonic cleaning, cleaning the ports with what you can get and then get a meth kit to do the rest.
There's also some Liqui Moly stuff you can spray into you're intake while the engine is running to clean off the carbon. There's a thread about that somewhere in this forum.
Unless of course, you're German engineer and can't live with the thought of having a job half done...

I have a few sprinkles there as well and wondered where it came from, but didn't find anything obvious.

Haha, thanks. I typically don't have patience to wait for a friend to lend me garage space or for summer to show up.

This is weird. The spray seems to be longitudal. May be look at your oil return pipe from the turbos. The question is this spray oily or sooty? Or may be it is something to do with your ATF smell issue.

In regards to the soot below the turbos. I think we all have this thus may be normal operating conditions. I have no idea where it actually comes from.

OP, you alluded to something that prompts me to ask this question. Is CBU cleaning covered under the original 4yr/50k warranty, in addition to CPO?

Sorry if I made that sound confusing. CBU is covered under the oringinal warranty (4 year/50k) and CPO (extra 2 years/100k)

You were clear, it was me who was confused since I'm new to this car (335d) and had always been curious about CBU being covered.

I'm at 22k, warranty expiring in June and CPO going 2 years beyond that....so, I hope it pops up in between now and then, lol.

Damn after two days I was a half hour late! A leak around the waste gate actuator shaft was my guess.
