335i n54 mishimoto intercooler

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum, I drive a 2007 335i e92. The car has the jb4, bms dual cones, charge pipe and tial bov, tomorrow I am having catless vrsf downpipes fitted and a mishimoto intercooler. Is the intercooler any good? It wasn't cheap! Will I feel a big power increase with the two fitted together? Thanks in advance.

You already bought a Mishimoto intercooler, but asking if it is good? You should have asked before... :P
But to answer your other question, yes you will have a noticeable power increase with downpipes and intercooler. You should switch to map 2, but make sure you fill up with 93 octane...

Great thank you for your reply. I read a couple of good reviews, got all excited and bought one, then after I'd paid for it I read a couple of negative reviews which has thrown me! I'm currently on map 5. Is map 2 better for that set up is it?

Brilliant news. Thought I'd made a mistake for a second!! Kept reading about the standard connections being restrictive. Suppose they've thought of this in their design though.

Yes, map 2 is for downpipes and 93 octane.

You can try both map 2 and map 5.

I'm not sure how to do that to be honest. I've had the car about 6 months and all I know is that it's on map 5! Never been on the jb4 myself!

How to datalog JB4 You'll need the USB cable. You can route it through your glove box or some just run it outside the hood and into the passenger door temporarily.

The stock connections are restrictive but not enough to make those upgrades negligible. The stock inlet is a slight restriction, nothing you'll notice unless you got an intercooler without the restriction and even then it would likely only be a difference on paper and not on the street.

Thanks Jeff, that's reassuring, I thought that maybe it'll not be much different from the stock intercooler from what I was reading. My aim is 420bhp. What other mods would I need for this?

There are definitely better options available for way less. I'd only buy this if you're interested in keeping the stock connectors which are restrictive and create additional pressure loss.

I bought the Wagner intercooler, it uses stock connections. Install took like 25 mins no cutting or the stock piping or bumper shroud was required. All this talk of the restrictive piping, I feel no difference between my car and my friends car with VRSF intercooler, infact I regularly beat him in drag races. Just throw that mishimoto intercooler in and enjoy.

I prefer stock connectors as well. But i can see how they can be restrictive, esp the inlet side. Since temperatures are high there, density is low and volume flow rate is high. Thus velocity is high for smaller diameters. Pr drop increases as a result.

What is the inlet dia?

Outlet different story. Charge has been cooled(hopefully!) and volume flow rates are lower. In fact an ideal ic should have a large inlet and smaller outlet...

A review requires one to own, test or use a product, I'd be surprised if you actually read negative reviews (I haven't. Read lots of oppinions and data on using factory connectors). The end tanks are fabulous, the core and build construction very good. The only caveat vs any other 5" intercooler is the factory connectors. As far as I'm concerned that's hear nor there for anybody with stock turbos and not trying to break records. If it was an absolute choke it be one thing (say with factory connectors you were limited to 370whp) but having seen cars with FACTORY intercoolers pushing over 400whp with ethanol or meth I know for a fact this is not the case until somewhere well past the 400whp mark (yes I know they have to be pushed harder). If you want more than that or need the ultimate intercooler you should not be using a 5" intercooler anyway. Otherwise this whole connector sh*t is right up there with the DCI vs stock airbox argument. For many people putting those monstrosities and noise in the engine bay isn't worth the noise, looks or 10whp and 0.09sec/1mph 1/4 mile difference. Whatever you couldn't beat before a DCI is still going to spank you after you put it on. Whatever you couldn't beat with a good 5" intercooler with factory connectors you aren't going to beat with a 2.25 or 2.5" piping. You ass-o-meter certainty can't feel 10whp on any car making more than 100whp or so.

I've logged stock and mishimoto intercoolers extensively and it consistently about 22-25 deg cooler than stock on a 3rd gear log pulls at typical N54 shift point (6200 rpm) and 30 deg by redline (7000 rpm for kicks). Trend only continues to widen halfway into 4th gear but I try not to go to jail often so I don't have much data outside of single 3rd gear pulls. I know during 75 deg weather testing the one time I decided to log part of 4th the Mishimoto was cooler at 5900 rpm in 4th gear than the stock intercooler was in 3rd. It may not be the king kong of intercoolers but it allows me to sleep better at night running an ethanol tune. All I have is a Mishimoto IC, drop in K&N filter and tune via BB flash. I can't wait to get a new clutch in so I can dyno and shut people up once and for all about what you NEED to have to make decent hp. So far I've spent $60 on a K&N filter, $180 on a BT cable, $600 on the intercooler, E85 right now here is $1.79 per gallon and it looks completely stock...but it doesn't run like stock.
