BMW DME code ?

Since I have had a bunch of limp modes and SES light come on for various reasons just wanted to know whats the best way to clear the DME so when I take it in for service nothing looks out of wack. I dont think that the obdII reader clears everything. does unplugging your battery over night work or are there other methods?

You only can clear all DME errors by hooking it up to a BMW service computer. You should manage this at a different dealership you bought the car. The DME stores the date when it has been cleared last.

What Eugen said, clearing OBDII codes does not clear internal codes.

However, if you can wait until late spring or early summer, there should be a $500 solution. And this solution will resolve many matter people face with trouble shooting.

AutoEnginuity is coming out with an N54 specific software and cable system. It will allow the BMW specific codes (i.e. non-OBDII) to be read and reset. Adaptation channels will be able to be read and reset. Also, DME test can be forced. Not to mention that all sensor data will be able to be read and logged.

It will prove to be invaluable in the long run.

So when is this coming out? I have to get serviced in about 6000 miles.

Last email stated late spring but I would plan on early summer. They said they would email me when it is ready.

What is "it"?

If you are referring to the OBDII code reader, then NO. They only report the Federally mandated OBDII codes. BMW has a whole slew of others which are critical to troubleshoot but we cannot see them yet. Sure, the dealer technicians can read them using thier equipment, but not us lowly owners.

As an example, there has been a similar type tool for the Audi/VW crowd. This is an example of how OBDII readers do not tell the whole story:

They are a company that makes OBDII software but they also offer vehicle specific additions. The newer BMW's are not supported yet for the vehicle specific functions but soon should.

Not their market as it is easier to read than to firgure how and what to update.

That sucks, I know someone who just bought one and I was hoping he could clear codes for me.

Arent all BMW dealers connected to the same service system in order to keep "one" history of the car, services, repairs, warranty claims etc. and arent all dealers supposed to use this?

Not all will and in my experience, most won't. That is, at least around my area. Plus, having something at homewould sure be more convienent.

They are connected to the same service network. It depends on the dealership to send the data of your car to BMW. It is not an online system.

So what do you do when you go there,"hi, can you kindly clear my DME of any codes that may be stored there"? wont they ask why? whats the best way to do this? whats the best excuse?
