Really irritating noise from the front wheels. Any advice is great
Hello everyone.
Starting to come to the end of my love with this car as it has had this noise for around 3-4 months now & 4000 miles later it's still there still the same, was kind of hoping it would fix itself or it would get worse & pin point an issue but sadly not.. Anyway the noise in question... It sounds like when your brake pads/discs are on the way out almost like a metal on metal noise, replaced the discs & pads & checked for any stones near the disc guard.. Nope still there.. It happens I'd say around 20mph-40mph & then due to speed or engine noise it's not something to be heard, you can hear it any gear that I have tried mainly 3rd 4th as lower speeds in lower gears, a lot easier to hear who you are rolling on the brakes. Does not sound like a wheel bearing as it's more sporadic when it happens however does almost seem rotational not engine speed related which kind of pin points to the wheel area I would of thought. Do not get any feel through the pedals or steering & gets no worse if turning nor does it get better, car drives spot on & no hesitation anywhere. Took it to my local Indy & he took out for a spin, I heard it ever so faintly he said he could hear nothing so drew a blank & he also said highly doubt would be a wheel bearing. Can anyone try & point me in the right direction here or has this happened to you if so what was it? Thanks very much for any help what so ever really do appreciate it. Should probably add that the car is an e91 320d with 66k miles 2011 Shaun |

Maybe a long shot but I have experienced noises similar to those you describe when the tyres on my E90 were reaching the last 25% of their life. Despite having a reasonable amount of tread, the noise sounded as though the front wheel bearings were shot. This was only7 noticeable at low speed. Changing the tyres made an instant improvement. The tyres were Nankang NS2s BTW.

Suspension Top mounts.
It sounds as if there is an increased rumbling from the front and can be really loud. It's a weak point on e9x and most other beemers in my experience. |

No rumbling at all.
It comes at very slow speeds upto about 10/15mph max, and is rotational. Doesn't get any better or worse with braking nor speeding. Just happens intermittently. Haven't seen how thin my brake pads are so can't say it's that yet. |

Shagged topmounts transmit noise through to the body and so you find some odd noises coming through. When mine went, I found it to be intermittent and it appeared to be temperature dependant. Possibly because of uneven expansion of materials.
When I say rumbling, it's not obvious, it's just a harsh noise like increased road noise, you get other symptoms such as a slight vagueness at straight ahead too. Suspension noises can be a nightmare to diagnose and what you are hearing may make no sense at all, you just have to go through a process of elimination and it's hugely difficult to work it out without actually getting your hands on something. |

Does it do it in gear, or if you're coasting in neutral?
