I lived in Astoria, near a subway stop (forgot which one) and loved it.
20 - 30 mins into Manhattan. Close to freeways.

I was born and raised in Astoria, and it is awesome without a doubt. However, going to and from Amittyville every day will be a huge pain. NYC traffic blows, and you will likely feel it in most parts of Queens. You can easily spend an hour and a half going to and from. I would suggest somewhere in LI closer to Amittyville

I would look in long island and not brooklyn or queens. That commute will make you rip your hair out. I used to commute from Long Island to NYC and it was horrible. Trust me move closer to work and you can party in the city all u want. Lets face it you will be going to and from work more than having a good time socializing. Either way long island has plenty of places to go and has a way better car scene than brooklyn or queens could ever have. No where to park= no car shows meets etc.
Good luck. |

Jus moved out to deer park, which is like 2 exits past Amittyville. I work in Jamaica queens and lived out there for over 15 yrs. the north side of Jamaica towards Flushing is a great area. Close to the F and E train lines which take you 30-40 mins tops to get to the city and only a 30 min car ride to the city on weekends, even during night life nights.

NYC sucks, yes there are many highways but who the fuck wants to drive on those pothole infested shit holes. In a nutshell NYC is expensive, houses are pretty much crammed on top of each other, limited parking (be ready to have your bumpers raped if you park on the street), roads look like something you might see in Berlin circa 1945 and that's after repairs are done. Only lower your car in NYC if you are a glutton for pain.

I would Astoria would be the best place or Bayside which will leave you closer for work and about the same distance on the LIRR into the city.

I lived in long island city til i was 16, still have family there. its great area and close to Manhattan but parking sucks.
3 years ago I moved from valley stream long island to Brooklyn, totally different world lol. I work in Oceanside and the commute was great 15 minute drive. Living in brooklyn I give myself 1hr and 15 minutes to get to work in Oceanside using Belt parkway. Parking sucks in Brooklyn as well lol. I think you should consider finding a place in Long island border of Queens so you can commute to either places of your interest. Traffic on the Belt parkway plus the potholes i had to change my hours to 7am to 3pm/4pm |

Yeah I think budget should be something discussed. Also, I've always been one to say live as close to work as possible. That's your means of living. The other things are secondary. My good friend moved to bayside recently right by the lirr. He likes it there. And parking isn't too bad. Believe there is no alternate side where he is at.
Our subway isn't lik DC it running all the time...unless there is construction (which is often on certain lines) ...the 7. |

alternate side parking sucks, my fiancee and I both have x3's. parking is horrible we usually leave one parked on the driveway and 1 blocking driveway. We both drive out to Long Island, tried car pooling sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesnt. her shift and locations changes.
The ideal place is to find a place near LIRR also 30 min drive to your job, that way you have an option to take both. |

As I've said, look at places near Valley Stream (Laurelton, Queens Village and Springfield Gardens). These places have direct connections (within a few blocks) to the LIRR, most nassau county buses, MTA buses, Southern State, Belt and Cross Island. Also, they are very close to Long Island, probably 5 minutes. There's a lot of parking in these areas because it's residential. Do your research! GL.

I live in greenpoint, BK, between williamsburg and long island city. check it out, one of the best hoods in NY.
I live in a big building that is not really close to the $1,500 budget if you want to live without roommates. I have a dog and an attached garage as well, which is clutch for the f10. |
