Paint chip and Rust
Hey guys, I recently bought a used BMW and unfortunately it came with some rust and paint chips. I need opinions on whether it could be done as a DIY or if I'm better off bringing it to a shop. Please note, that I'm still new to using forums, and I'm pressed on time at the time that I am writing this post. I don't know how to embed photos from dropbox but I will include the links to download it. If it is breaching the rules of this forum, please let me know.
Let's say I were to DIY: As you can see, on the hood there are two minor paint chips near the edge of the hood. The only problem is, is that one of the chips looks like it has started to form rust. But on the good side, it's near the edge, so I'm thinking that it wouldn't be noticeable if I did it myself. https://www.dropbox.com/s/60km2s2jmq...80729.jpg?dl=0 There is also another chip that looks like its rusted near the hood emblem, and it looks like I can make it unnoticeable as well. https://www.dropbox.com/s/w1ngmkdu8b...80706.jpg?dl=0 This is also the case with the right side rear passenger door. It doesn't look like it's penetrated the primer, but there is the possibility that it has started forming rust and I need some opinions on it. https://www.dropbox.com/s/smgl07dgmp...80743.jpg?dl=0 On the passenger rear fender, there are major paint chips, but again, it doesn't look like it's penetrated the primer. But there is also a huge rust spot on one of the paint chips. I have an idea of how I would go about it. For the major parts that need to be sanded down, I would get any generic primer. For the base coat I would buy it either from expresspaint.com as per the recommdations coming from a post on e90post, or I would go to a local place that sells paint matched to the colour code of your car. That's where the first issue comes in. Which place should I go to? Should I buy from the place recommended by a forum member, or a place that is "reputable" in my city. It's a place called Rondex. I would also get a clearcoat, but haven't decided on which to use. The second issue is paint blending. Because most of the damage is near or on the edges, I don't think it would be really noticeable if I worked on it on my own, unless people inspected the car further. And from what I am aware, discolouration is usually from the clear coat and can be sanded off. I'm not going to do that, but I do plan on detailing my car in the near future, which is kind of like sanding off the first few layers of the clear coat. So is it necessary to blend the paint? The third issue are for minor paint chips, where it hasn't started to rust. I know that most people would recommend Mr.Colorchip, but the idea of having clear coat also comforts me. So I'm planning on buying the paint touchup kit that BMW sells, the one that includes the clear coat as well. TLDR: 1. Lots of paint chips and some rust but near the edges 2. DIY or shop? 3. Rondex vs expresspaint? 4. To blend or not to blend? 5. Mr.colorchip vs BMW touch up? Thanks guys! All inputs are welcome! |
