What exactly is a pump flash?

Friend of mine is trying to talk me into a "pump flash" on my car. This is without any piggyback tune, just a pump flash. It's supposed to up the boost, among other things. Can anybody explain this better to me?

Pump Flash just means a flash only tune, no piggy back needed, specific to 91, 93, 94, 95, or 98 octane fuel that you get at the pump.

Does it affect most of the same things as a piggyback tune? thanks for the help. Just wondering what to expect.

Maybe a better question is, what are the main differences between a flash and piggyback and are there any major upsides/downsides?

I think I am the wrong person to ask this question......lol

Here is my layman's explanation of how a piggyback works in a closed looped system environment like our N54

It has its cons and pros but its all what you make out of it and what your thirst is for.

Flash tuning is the natural and native invironment of the N54 .

Thanks! I think if I'm understanding correctly, piggyback tunes do not directly modify the ECU, while flash tunes do? Anyone else?

Piggyback alters the boost targets without changing the ECU boost tables.

Flash usually have smoother power delivery and they have access to fuel and ignition tables.

Piggy (JB4) are a lot easier to adjust (even for a non-expert). They also offer a lot more cool features than a flash ( on the fly map switching, boost limit for 1st and 2nd gear, boost hijack,etc...)

A flash tune is "tuning" the ecu parameters directly. Ex stock tune targets X-boost X-timing targets X-AFR etc. The values are changed directly in the brain. Basically its using the same controller as the factory to control parameters just with the tuners values. Stock tune is a flash tune by BMW.

You can also do a backend flash with the JB4. So it's not JUST a piggyback tuner.

With the backend flash (which should be called a front end flash IMO) the ECU (DME) controls fueling and timing while the JB4 controls boost. On a pump gas it allows more tq at low rpm because the JB4 has limited fueling control down there. For the same reasons its REQUIRED for ethanol content above e40.
