Xenon headlight 3m cover burning??

Have an e90 and just wanted my headlights protected from chips so the tinting company suggested the 3m cover with a slight tint. Had it done and after about 2 weeks noticed that one light (driver side) is burning a hole through the headlight cover and damaged the actual headlight cover as well..

The passenger side isn't as bad but you can see stress marks around the beam pattern.

Anybody else have this issue? This can't be normal!!

Were the DRLs replaced with high powered lasers?

First I've ever heard of this.. none of the bulbs should give off enough heat to melt protective film, the lenses barely get warm.

I'll get a picture and post it later today. The lights are pre-Lci and everything is oem. Only thing changed was the angel eye bulbs but they were from my old original set before the accident. That set was in my car for 2 years and no issues.

And that's what I thought as well. The housing should not get that hot! On the driver side it's like the focal point is set at the housing cover. Kinda like taking a magnifying glass and focusing the sun to a single spot.

Keep in mind, these lights are about a year old only!

I'd say you took a flying rock to the headlight.. the other side just looks like normal wear from highway driving. You only really notice them right in front of the projector because the light makes them stand out, I'd bet they're all over the headlight. Id' take off that lense film, give them a good polish and re-apply a new cover.

I've had Lamin-X film on my headlights from the beginning... it's been nearly 3 years and several hot and super cold days with zero issues.

Looks like road rash to me.

I usually just see that sort of thing when folks follow a bit too closely to the cars in front of them, taking road debris directly to the front bumper and the lights.

That's what I thought as well but not the case. The cover is off as it actually burnt off at that one spot. I actually burnt my finger touching the lense at that 1 spot on drivers side. Passenger side, maybe it's normal. Drivers side, no way. Bmw peeled off film and agreed that it's not normal and the light needs to be replaced yesterday. Now the only thing is, will they warranty it or not.

I think i've seen this before actually. It is probably from the xenon light starting to cause the plastic to dry out and these look almost like surface cracks. When you put the film on the we glue filled these in and they disappeared. Now that the glue has dried you can see these more noticeably now

I'd double check to see if you can feel these, if not then they would be on the actual lens itself. The only way to fix it would be to remove the film, then either polish or use a 1000-3000 grit sandpaper to smooth them out. THey will need to be polished to be clear after that before reapplying the film

Thanks for the reply. In my case, the pics you see are the actual lights as the film was taken off. The stress marks are from the inside. The one spot, the housing is actually melted. On the passenger side I believe I could polish and repair but the driver side, I doubt it.

So had a chat with my insurance guy and it turns out, when they replaced the lights, they didn't use oem parts but replica! He was very kind and issued a replacement order to have both lights replaced with oem headlights at no cost to me. Maybe why it started to burn through the the liners.
