Camera Retrofit kit

My brothers GF has an IS250. I noticed that when she backs up, her car has a camera that relays the video to her nav system. The best we can do is PDC, which is not bad.

I was scoping out another forum when I discovered a retro fit kit for a 7 series and a tech on that list provided me info on a retrofit for our cars when I asked. Supposidly, it allows you to also connect other video input (like a dvd) to your car so you can view it on the nav display.

I felt this info would be useful to someone on the list and I may consider doing it myself if I don't lose my PDC functionality which I paid money for!

------------
For E-90/92/93 with an on-board monitor.
Retrofit kit No.
66 21 0 406 999 LVDS converter extras kit
66 21 0 412 010 Rear View Retrofit

The installation time is approx. 2.0 to 2.5 hours. This may vary depending on the condition of the car and the equipment in it.This retrofit system does not require coding.

Looks fairly simple for a tech since taking apart connectors in order to splice in a pin/wire or avoiding kinking/damaging cables comes naturally. They are personnel trained on BMW cars with the appropriate specialist knowledge.Im sure an indy could do it,but all BMW techs would do it right.

The only problem is we don't know whether the Euro iDrive is the same as US iDrive. If they are one and the same, you can coax the iDrive into take the retrofit kit.

Should also be able to do this relatively easily with the TVNav2Go. There is a DIY on here somewhere. Just add the RCA cables from the backup camera. Someone has DIY on running the wires and everything. Just buy the camera.

I have also thought about adding Carputer as I don't have Idrive. Then you can add what you want.

this looks interesting. where does the rear view camera mount. i take it from the part number (66 21 0 412 010 Rear View Retrofit) is the camera or housing? would be cool to see some pics as well.

ive had this feature on many suvs with my last being the touareg which was very handy in tight spots. the camera was mounted below the rear hatch handle area on the touareg which you couldn't see from plain site. i am not a fan of the license plate mounting system which looks tacky imo..

Yes!

About where the camera goes, it goes right above the license plate.
It's difficult to see which is good.

I'm using the new BMW ACM that supports up to 4 camera inputs and works with iDrive knob. It also selects reversing camera when the car is put in reverse. You can then choose between PDC display or Camera display. It also supports USB interface that is able to play not only songs, but also DVD videos stored on a USB harddrive - selectable with the i-Drive knob.

Anyway the only thing that is missing is the car tracks that should be embedded with the steering wheel angle. There is a optical steering angle sensor on the steering wheel, so I will be looking at using a PIC to draw in the two lines to where the car is going. I dont have PDC so I wont be overlaying the PDC info on the video.

Dont seem to be able to attach the manuals.

I also have manuals for the round vision camera install, DVD install DVD-Set top box, etc that all connects to the ACM.

Inputs:
1. Front camera (Composite video)
2. Rear camera (Composite video)/works with PDC
3. DVD player or DVB box (C video and audio)
4. Additional camera (Composite video)
5. USB addon (Composite video & audio)

The unit also shows some useless info such as engine temperature.

Outputs:
1. RS232 (from CAN)
2. Power down signal for all your new toys when car goes into sleep

The optional USB interface allows you to play back Pictures (JPG, etc), Videos (MPEG, etc) and Audio(MP3, etc) from a USB harddrive or FLASH memory. Let me repeat you can play back VIDEO from a FLASH memory/HDD.

Furthermore you can adjust on the menu the aspect ratio of playback (full-screen) or not.

How about a Radar tracking device on your BMW. This shows all the other cars on the road and a square around the car that the ACC decided to follow or as the fighter pilots would say "the target that you're locked on"

It is pretty cool little box that a gentleman in Germany built that convert the ACC signal to a video output like this:

That is fantastic!

I noticed you are in South Africa. I wonder if that would work on a US spec car?

I am REALLY interested in putting in a rear backup camera into my MY09 E90 LCI 335i sedan (on the way).

I am ONLY interested in using the true BMW OEM kit and parts, however (not non-BMW parts made by another supplier like TVNav2Go).

Does anybody have installation instructions for a E90?

It's frustrating that this option is not available in the US. I've seen on BMWUSA that the parts are sold for X3's but not for 3-series cars....

Is there anywhere that I can read up on the "ACM", "CAN", etc? I'm not familiar with the current lingo, nor the architecture of the current E90. (I'm not a total noob - I personally did a full BMW OEM TV retrofit to my E39 nav system a few years ago - I'm just a generation or two behind!)

I'd also be interested to understand what features should work with the backup camera - i.e. directional lines, overlay of PDC info, etc...

I would guess that things might be different with the E90 LCI, due to the new iDrive system. But BMW is still offering the rear backup camera (as well as a front camera that looks left and right at intersections), so I'm not sure how much has changed.....

Thumbs up

FYI, I just downloaded the Installation Instructions for the ACM module dated 8/2006 (grrrr....it's been so long )

Anyhow the part number for the retrofit kit is:

65 50 0 418 002 Retrofit kit BMW accessory menu ACM E90,E91,E92,E60, E61 and E63,E64.

I just called Momemtum BMW here in Houston and the parts guy didn't find it.

Roveractive on Ebay has it to order. $750.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-G...7586QQtcZphoto

The thing I can't figure out is, the earlier module doesn't seem to be able to playback video from USB devices, however the post above indicates the later ACM module can?

That installation also look tricky to me ...

Interesting module though.

Who's going to be first in the USA :-)

I just called BMW Houston North and they didn't have it either. Circle BMW said they don't have the part either. I think this part will need to be bought in Europe and then shipped here.

If you don't mind, I have a few questions:

1) I would love to get my hands on a download of the install and operation manual for the rear camera install. Is there anywhere on-line that I could find these?

2) I've found the operating and technical docs (not installation) on the "E70 Rear-view Camera (RFK)", and that thing is amazing. The Assistance Graphics, Lane Help Lines, Turning Circle Lines, Obstacle Markings, Virtual Camera Pan, and even automatic de-icing of the camera are amazing features.
Does the rear-view camera for the E90 have ANY of these features that are in the E70's RFK?

3) Is it easy to get the PDC and Rear-View camera working together? Do you have to have to select the ACM to get the rear camera view to come up, or does it show up automatically when you go into Reverse? My car will have front and rear PDC....

5) Is the ACM required to add only the Rear-View Camera to an E90 with iDrive?

I'm actually interested mainly in adding the Rear-View Camera to an E90 LCI model that has the new iDrive system, so things might a little different. But I see that BMW still offers the camera accessories for the LCI, so maybe the interfaces are the same....
