Initial Oil Change

tried searching under "oil change" didn't find what I was looking for. Basically 1st time bmw owner and was wondering do you guys wait for the car to tell you its time to change? I know it has that free oil change/warranty stuff but the dealer I asked says the car will tell me when its time to change the oil and I'm already at 10k, so I was wondering if thats the case for everyone to wait or did you guys just change the oil on your own?

I change my own every 12000kms, and whenever the computer tells me I go into the dealer for my free oil change.
Some dealers will also change your oil once a year...regardless of miles on the car.

I changed my oil at 2500 miles. I brought it to my dealer, they only charge $95. I always do an early oil change no matter what anyone says cuz in a new engine every internal part fits real tight, and there will be tiny bits of loose metal floating around until it hits the filter, so its best to drop that oil.

You'll find people u lease (ie, ME) will wait. I'm at 17k miles on original oil + 1.9qts for top off.

It's really up to you, and you will in all likelihood not receive benefit from more frequent changes until you're over 100k miles.

Remember this: in past due to manufacturing methods and the quality of oil, your car required more frequent changes. Now, the oil we use is significantly better and last longer, hence longer change intervals.

haha..i see the oil every day...if you beleive that your nuts!...oil changes every 5k...i personally feel alot of the issues people are seeing with these cars with vanos issues, camshaft wear problems, rough idling, can all come back to the oil changes...but hey what do i know i just fix these things...i mean really its $100 bucks every 5k...is that REALLY that big of a deal? 15k is already a crapload of miles on an engine and then theres people such as yourself who cant spare 1 hour of their time to get a simple oil change done

Depends on a lot of things, including how you drive your car. Personally I expect a lot from the engine, so I performed an oil/filter change following the so-called "break-in" period around 1,300 miles. I'm going to do another one about 5,000 miles later, then every 5K miles. I don't care about the free maintenance for oil changes. I like doing them myself and getting to know the car inside and out. Many will say this is totally overkill with synthetic oil but I don't care. I'm overly cautious and like knowing the oil in my car is new and clean. My car isn't a lease and I'm planning on keeping it for a while!

I lease

Extended oil changes have been going on with BMW's for almost 10yrs, and there isn't one issue engine failure due to poor lubrication as a result of extended change intervals. Another thing. 90% of the people on this forum will unload their cars prior to 100k miles, so they will not gain the benefit from more frequent change intervals.
