Corrosive Bird poop!
OK, not really technical. Got bird poop on my car some time on sunday. Washed the car monday, after work at the local £5 car wash place. This stuff was like concrete. It would barely come off. They didn't even manage to get it off. Had to use some boiling soapy water at home.
Anyway it's clearly taken off the outer protective layer of varnish or whatever! I've had bird crap on my car before and I usually remove it asap but this stuff was something else! |

I keep this and A microfibre cloth in my boot for just this reason! As soon as I see one. A quick spray and it wipes off quickly. It might not have taken the lacquer off the car and some fine cutting compound maybe bring this back. Something like meguiars 105 then 205 would be good. T cut might do it but that can be a bit strong. Quick tip on preventing the damage 2-3 layers of car wax really help removing and bird crap and also help to stop any damage.

I actually do wax my car guys.
I waxed it again yesterday after the wash. I've had another look and it feels smooth but looks discoloured? Very stange. I'll snap a picture. |

I notice by your picture you have a dark coloured car (possibly lemans blue)
My old boys lemans blue is the same. Bird crap seems to distort the laquer even if a bird craps on it the same day. My missus audi a3 (again dark blue) bird crap eats the paint like crazy (even in a few hours) Both cars are waxed regularly. My missus one i feel im losing the battle with it. Drives me insane. Meanwhile on my arktic metallic bmw i could leave bird crap on for a year and it wouldnt leave a mark. Same with my silver work van. Must be something about dark blue i think |

Combination of heat absorption properties of darker colours and high pigment content. Black cars seem to suffer more than lighter cars.

I read a article on here the other day but for the life of me I can't find it
The jist was that heat makes the laquer soft & bakes on the bird sh1t, the laquer misshapes around the bird turd & your left with a mark I don't know if cutting compounds etc would cure but this happened to me a few years ago & SRP didn't shift it but i can't see the marks anymore |

Yes the car is black with green and maroon glitter in it. Black Sapphire I think it's called.
The bird poop has left a patch but it's actually very difficult to photograph as it only seems to be visible at certain angles. It's actually becoming difficult to spot which is a good thing. The little bit of sunshine must have really baked it on. Plus an acidic diet of berries or whatever really made it bond with the paint. |

Just going to try and explain this with a armchair scientific explanation; I think what happen is certain birdsh!t is very acidic and the wet crap hits a sunbaked paint sits then the clear liquid part of poop acts as magnifying glass sort to speak and burns the paint until it drys then the result is the raisins looking micro-spot that is actually burned clear coat.....so I'm guessing that if the burn spot is not too bad a good cut and compound may just get it out.

I've had this problem. I spoke to a few guys in a body shop and the best way to remove it is heat..
I had a sapphire black 335i, I tried everything. using a cutting compound (menzerna) with a porter cable orbital etc etc nothing would get the mark out. In the end I used a heat gun and used it over the area in a circular motion, not letting things get too hot, after about 30 seconds you will see the mark start to disappear Repeat the steps if it's not completely gone. Do not hold the heat gun stationary over the area you risk burning the paint. Worked on my bonet and rear quarter panel. You can just leave it and let the summer sun do the same thing but this can take weeks if not months. |

I know exactly what you mean. I've had this before on mine.
My car was only left for 1 day with birdshit on, in direct sunlight. My cars are always protected, so it didn't make a difference what products I had on it, the birdshit had baked in. I used Megs Compound (and a lot of elbow grease) to remove mine. Here are a few before/after shots. Bootlid BEFORE: AFTER: Rear bumper BEFORE: AFTER: |

Thanks for the tips guys. Mine is like CJ's. It lookls as if you had adhesive tape on the car and pulled it off leaving behind some adhesive. A matted effect. I will try applying some heat and see what happens.
It is becoming more difficult to spot but it's annoying to see any imperfection on the car. |
