Think I blew a shock...

Hey guys,

I think I blew a shock. It doesn't surprise me with some of the potholes around here.

See the picture below (hopefully you can see enough detail). The fluid covers the shock on the passenger rear, and it appears to be pooling near the bottom rubber bushing. What would you recommend? Just replace it? What about upgrading the suspension now and dropping the car?

Potholes or not your car is '07 and if still on factory shocks this is to be expected. Anyhow, they are affordable and easy to replace.

Ah, I wish. It's only a 328, so no unfortunately. But, I like to keep it looking halfway decent (meaning I like to give it more of an agressive stance). I don't even know how much a new shock will cost or if I should just do all four. How's the labor involved to do it? I've replaced the brakes and valve cover gasket, so I am assuming this would be an equally difficult DIY?

If the road are rough where OP lives as already mention the coils will last twice as short, so he will be looking back, a lot...

if one is leaking the others will follow, pretty soon. these are very good deal. rears you can do yourself, no special tools required, for front you need spring compressor and struct knuckle spreader socket.

one shock is like $50000000000 set of coilovers you can find under $1000 depending on what you looking to do. (BC Racing > $1000 / KW V1 ~ $1200) Get coils!!!

why are you guys pushing for coilovers? OP already complained of poor roads and coilover will not last long.

Pretty sure there are potholes everywhere bud. Regardless of the suspension type, one should be avoiding potholes - not intentionally plowing through them. Also, OP stated that he would "like a more aggressive stance." The alternative would be lowering springs, which will reduce the life of a strut if not properly paired. Even then, you spend just as much money and lose the ability to adjust right height.

Let me reiterate: buy coils and never look back.

Do you know anything about coilovers, or are you just trying to flood this forum with more misinformation?

Uneducated and vocal posters are the worst things on any car forums.

But anyway, good shock/springs combo >>> cheap coilover sets.

OP, there are a variety of aftermarket shocks you can go for that will improve the ride of your cars a lot. You can read up on the variety of shocks that Koni and Bilstein offers.

Lol, I will try to avoid plowing into them next time. :-) By definition, Ohio potholes = crater. Hard to avoid sometimes, especially on country roads.

Thank you all for the input! It is much appreciated. If the roads were a bit better, the car mileage was a little less, and my wallet a little fatter, I would probably go with STs; however, I am likely going to go with an OE replacement shock and call it a day.

Much appreciated all!

How many miles are on your car?

You should replace in pairs.

Koni FSD's are a nice option for a daily driver in a 328

Can get a set for $600.00.

Bav Auto has a nice video on how to replace them. If you live in a cold weather state that uses salt on the roads, you might have a hard time getting them out.

Bilstein B12 is worth mentioning - B8 shocks and Eibach Pro Kit Springs which give you a mild drop. Look into them, there's a ton of info on them and they last long. Also, they ride very well.
