Hi all, i've got some Supersport ( german company ) lowered spring perches there meant to drop the front around 10mm from M sport height, but my problem is fitting them..

Im quite spanner happy,i have recently done my main stat and glow plug control unit ( what a pig to do ) but i've never done anything to do with springs before, and from what i've read there a pig to get the springs off I.E impacket sockets and high powered air drill needed + spring compressers..

So i'm thinking its best to get these fitted by somebody in the know who's done this sort of stuff before.

Can anybody give me a heads up or point me in the direction of a decent place thats done suspension work for them that

A. Doesn't cost the earth, whats the going rate for this? i dont mind helping and paying for somebodys time as i'd learn along the way, but garages wouldn't want me hanging around.

B. Know what there doing

C. is local ( ish ) to me BURNLEY, Lancashire ( northwest )

I dont want to have to pay £80/£100 to get a £50.00 part fitted, thats all...

Any help would be great............

I can't help with diy but can you tell me if they are fronts and rears and is it possible to use them on car which is already lowered(eibach sportlines)? Thanks

As far as im aware there for the front, they just lower the hole strut amount as there short than the BMW standard ones...

Cheers RajB, i've ordered some spring compressers, a friend who's fitted a few sets of coilovers and springs to his past E46 cars has offered to help me fit them if i get stuck not finding a garage that can do them @ a reasonable price.

I've watched some youtube vid's on removing the front shocks, is there anything to watch out for?

I know on the Audis that the pinch bolts can be a right pain to get out is there anything like that on the E90?

I haven't done the write up for the suspension swap on the e92/e93 - I normally do, but haven't got round to it yet.

The pinch bolts will be fine - you can undo the bolt and simply tweak the clamp open slightly with a large screwdriver or small crowbar if necessary. Often you can just undo the clamp, twat it with a soft mallet, and then holding the spring, twist the strut to loosen and corrosion that may be binding it.

Aside form the obvious making sure you've undone all necessary things in the right order (including those little sensor links on the front wishbones):

You have to compress the springs quite a lot, and so placement of the compressor is quite important, or you end up with the threaded card getting wedged into the suspension turret cavity.

Also make sure you remove the front caliper, as otherwise you won't be able to get the strut assembly out of the arch.

When removing the strut assembly on the drivers side, have the steering turned full lock to the right - do the opposite for the passenger side - it will give you that little bit more clearance required, so when you push down on the strut assembly, you can ease assembly out gradually one top-mount bolt at a time.

Put an old towel or something over the arch and around the lip, to protect the paintwork when you're getting the strut in and out.

The rear is pretty straight forward and takes a fraction of the time.

Thanks Russbmw, if i end up doing it with a friend we will only be using hand tools, is this a problem?

The spring compressors i've ordered are rated for heavy duty usage, i think the biggest ball ache will be winding the compressors up by hand instead of using an air gun, i was thinking about putting the spring compressors 180 degrees from each other then widing each one a full turn then to the other then back again and so on until the springs compressed.

It's not a bad DIY job, as long as you have a torque wrench and know what torques everything needs to be at.

When undoing the spring compressors do it in stages like when doing them up, and probably away from the car just in case.

Will be no problem. I only have hand tools and have done the suspension on e36, e46, e39, e93 and e92 without trouble.

You should be able to use a 1/2" (or 3/4") socket ratchet in them, I know I can on my ones. So it's not too much aggro to be honest.

Put the compressors as near to 180 degrees apart as possible, you'll see what I mean about them interfering with the inside of the strut turret when you start doing the job. It's not a real issue, just you need to be doing it to figure it out, rather than me trying to describe it on here. You can go more than one turn at a time per compressor - you'll be there forever and a day doing it like that mate. Just use some common sense, and don't have the spring getting all compressed out of shape so one side is considerably more squashed than the other. Apart from anything else, if the tension is released too much (by compressing the opposite one), the compressor will likely slip round the spring coils....and it will do it quickly, so keep your hands out of the way. Same applies to releasing the compressors, loosen them off fairly equally, and keep your fingers well out of the way.

As Russ has stated really. He's covered everything pretty much. I haven't ever removed the calipers however and don't forget to undo the levelling sensor arm. Hand tools are fine for sure. I've only ever used hand tools for all my work on cars over the years.

it is pretty easy. if u havent got any I'd get some ratchet spanners would make winding the clamps in a bit quicker

I wouldn't recommend first time to do it on a bmw

As far as changing the front springs go on cars it is quite tricky

Biggest ballache on the e90 is compressing the spring.

You will be suprised at how long the standard springs are and just how much compressing of the spring is required to clear the arch!

I had to buy another set of spring compressors half way through as one set couldnt compress it enough

The spring compressers i've ordered are 240 mm long i'm hoping that will be enough to compress the springs..if I could find somebody to do it for me ( @ a decent rate ) I'd happily stand back and watch and learn.

But I don't see a garage wanting to take the job on for less that £70/£80...and the parts were only £40.00
