Cracked rim
Hey all,
I am sitting at the tire shop now getting new tires, and they just informed me one of my rear wheels has a crack in the rim. I saw it, and it's not too bad, but a crack nonetheless. The tire is not leaking. Should I be concerned and seek out a replacement or just drive it? It's a daily driver - no tracking. |

How would you feel if you have a crack on your control arms or subframe? A crack on your wheel isn't any better than that. Replace it as soon as possible.

BMW OEM wheels are very brittle. There was recent class action for cracked style 296. RFT doesn't help much either. Just get it replaced. Cracked wheel isn't really worth fixing.

They will cut into the crack to relieve stress.
Then they will weld it. Then machine. Paint too if they are good. I had a wheel fixed recently. I just did a detail inspection and I cracked 3 Forgestar wheels. So much for stronger and lighter than cast. I'm running Apex now. I'm throwing a set of $1600 forgestars in the recycle bin.

I have hit multiple potholes and asphalt "winkles" on the highway that are high enough to get air born, but still run straight and true after the first two years running with the factory wheels on the car. And that is with low profile stock RFT on these 19" factory wheels...

Why not just fix them?

I know the BBS made style 189 and 230 are pretty resistant to road damage. But some wheels are just shitty quality. If you find yourself bending/cracking a wheel or two every season, it might cheaper just replacing them with better quality ones.

I drove around Chicago for almost two years and did a road trip to the East Coast with the stock 230 wheels before I sold them, which I still regret... But anyway, I never had a single crack or bend on those wheels... Those wheels served me well despite the awful stock RFT, from my own experience.

At $150+ per wheel no way.
I fixed one because I needed the car back on the road. It had two cracks and a bend. Cost $200. Add another $300 for the other two and I was almost 50% to a set of Apex wheels. I have the Forgestars sitting in my garage. Anyone that wants them can have them for $250. The two rears are cracked but the fronts are fine. One of the fronts was cracked, then repaired.

I wouldn't fix or weld a wheel. Wouldn't that throw off the balance of the wheel and cause highway vibration?

dont do repairs, I tried repairs for my original 230 BMW wheels at a professional place but it will crack again and again. Waste of money.
I still have that set laying around in storage not sure what to do with it |
