I am completely underwhelmed. MSN article I read said 425 HP hemi was the most powerful in the Chrysler line up. A 355i stock will give you near 4.8-4.9 sec. Not to mention the piggyback chips and Dinan re flashes. The car must be extremely heavy to perform so poorly with 425 HP. Not sure about the TQ but I would also expect that to be fairly high.

I'm surprised as well. I'm sure road and track will get it to 4.5-4.6 though. Still a disappointment, though. In hindsight, none of the hemis put down the speed that you'd expect from that power. I wouldnt be surprised if the camaro stomps those times.

0-60? What does it do 0-100 in, and the 1/4 mile?
We have really gotten spoiled by how quick our 335s are. Time was, when anything under 5 sec was supercar fast.

yeah..def. a heavy car..just look at all of the SRTs with the 8s in them..they all weight 4k+ lbs..BUT, they do pick up speed very quickly and I bet the 1/4 time will be high 12s

4.8s is slow? Wow, some people have high expectations I guess. I remember hearing about the M5 getting to 60 in that time and I was impressed.
I think the numbers are fine. It might be heavy, but who knows.

^^ haha, you're right..that is a very fast time. But, as you've seen the past couple of years, everyone is getting 400+ HP and doing low-mid 4s. I guess that's everyone's expectations now

We gotta remember that this is a stock SRT8 too. Mod that thing and it'll probably run like a mofo.

It's a big heavy car, once it's moving it will rip!! It's like a BMW 7 Series V12 or the Audi S8..they don't have crazy 0-60 times, but look at their 1/4 mile traps and they're booking it.

"Impressed" and "Dodge" are not two words I put in the same sentence unless "not" is somewhere in there. The only Dodge I am a "fan" of is the Viper, but even then that was only for like 3 hours and afterwards I cut myself because of the thoughts I had.

It's sad that people instantly write cars off as shitty just because "it's a Dodge (or Ford or GM etc etc)". Try to drop the badge-blindedness for a few moments and learn to give things a chance.

I try to be as badge-blind as I can be, seeing as I remember my jap-import days. I really like the products chevy puts out. But Ford and Dodge have really dropped the ball IMO. The new mustang was such a disappointment for me. Especially the GT500, which could have been so much more. Thinking of dodge/chrylser, i'm unimpressed by using a late 90s E-class frame and slapping a hemi in it. I'm more unimpressived with the piss-poor safety ratings on the 300/charger, and it was sad to see the viper remain completely uncompetitive with the vette and other "entry-level" supercars. So it's not that I have an issue with dodge because they're dodge, I used to be a huge fan of the original viper and the stealth, and it's not like I have a problem with ford, because I thought the last gen cobra had one of the greatest engines America's ever built, but it just seems to me that dodge and ford have really dropped the ball as of late.

Well I definitely agree with you on all those points, and my statement was more out of generality than at any one person. Still, I don't like seeing people dismiss cars before they've even experienced them in person. I just think it's a tad ignorant is all.

This is fast for a heavy car, I mean look at the M5 and M6, they are heavy too but they have 500hp and they still do 4.8. At least that is according to BMW, and I'm sure that the 4.8 for the challenger is also according to Dodge, so if one of the magazines test the car, they'll sure be getting low to mid 4s times.

it doesn't always have to be your BMW vs the rest of the automotive world. You chose a BMW because it best fit your needs/desires; is it that much of a stretch to imagine others may have different desires? There are obviously alot of people who really want that new Challenger, every single one of the first run is spoken for I believe. If you're a muscle car guy this has to be the most exciting "retro" modern muscle car in years. And slow...c'mon. That was one test, and you know nothing of the conditions it was tested in. Besides if you're only going to publish one acelerration number, 0-100 or 1/4 mile is much more revealing. And there is so much more to how fast a car feels than what kind of 0-60 time it does. Those big V8's always have amazing torquey throttle response and are very well suited to "real world" ie street driving situations where these cars will spend 99% of their time. In other SRT8 applications this motor is rated at 420hp 420trq. Hardly weak numbers...should be good for high twelves. This is about equal to what most 335's with piggybacks do and they weigh at least 400lbs lighter. Throw an intake, some headers, and a quick chip tune on the hemi and you'll pick up alot of top end for not a lot of $$$ (compared to similar mods on bmw). Impressed? I am. I also still love my BMW. Imagine that... Last edited by MDL; 02-11-2008 at 04:48 PM.. |
