Got in car and suspension collapsed
Hi
Just checking if this has happened to anyone else and what it could be. Car: 2007 E92 MSport 320d I've been away for two weeks and have just started my car. I went to pull away and there was a big bang. The front right suspension seems to have collapsed and the wheel is touching the arch. Other side looks fine Going to jack it up tomorrow and have a look but thought I would ask to see if this happens to other similar cars. Not sure how it can collapse my moving it a foot but glad it happened on my drive rather than on the motorway. Any info appreciated |

I had the lower front control arm snap on my e91 under braking. The wheel was rubbing on the rear of the wheel arch afterwards.
BMW said that someone had jacked the car up using the control arm as a jacking point. Couldn't prove otherwise. |

I would imagine a spring has snapped, your brakes might have rusted on causing added force on the spring, happened to me on a old car
time to look for lowering springs.... |

Thanks everyone!
Managed to get the wheel off and the spring has snapped. Would the spring have needed to be already damaged for it to snap like this. I only moved about a foot I guess I need to get a mobile mechanic out, will they be able to fix this on my drive or will I need a tow to the garage, and would you recommend doing both front springs? JM85 - Don't think I need lowering springs. The bumpers an inch off the floor |

A front spring broke on my old e92 the other week - car had been stationary for a week!
Luckily I had warranty, otherwise BMW would have charge £700.... they had trouble with the realignment!!! They only replaced the broken spring..... I asked should both be changed & they said its not required. |

Many failures are due to a small amount of corrosion (coating has flaked). Along with winter road salts, contribute to hydrogen embrittlement, causing micro cracking, just a matter of time before it just snaps. I had both my front springs on my E91 break while static, one after a bad winter, the other spring the following winter. HighlandPete |

The picture of Murphyslaw's spring in the link, shows the kind of embrittlement failure.

We see a shed load of springs going AWOL, its sadly fairly common where we are due to our road surfaces.
One observation I've made is that the if you have a 5 series especially an M Sport they seem to be more common for us at least on the fronts than I've seen on any other BMW model, springs usually corrode over time leading to weakness, usually if you look at the rear springs on a car for instance on the lower 1/3 of the coil this area is where the coils corrode and eventaully usually let go, oddly enough going back to the 5's especially looking at the fronts they let go quite high up on the upper 3rd causing the effected side to collapse almost touching the tyre and usually lock to lock wheel movement is not possible, yet when you inspect the spring corrosion wise they don't appear visully to be that bad. A few months back, I drove home from work without a problem.
A few hours later I tried to reverse out of my drive but there was a big fat ugly grinding noise. Spring snapped sitting in the driveway! These things happen! |

Hi again
I'm trying to source a new spring and I'm unsure what I need. My car is a 320d Msport e92 2007. Will it have m-tech suspension or just standard. Suppliers are saying that some of the msports don't have m-tech and just have styling. Is there anywhere I can run a check on my car to see what I need? |

May be worth getting a specific part number for your car, if you are after one spring. This comment may not apply to your car, but BMW specification can be to a particular spring. I know with my car it was option based. Because it had a panoramic roof it had a specific spring, had to wait for one to come from Germany. Put your VIN in the link to RealOEM and you should see what suspension you have on the car. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select HighlandPete |

You need msport specific springs (they are shorter and stiffer than non msport springs) Mtech is americans name for msport is it not Best place i found was eurocarparts online. Type in reg number then browse through the springs on there, read the info on the springs and it will say in comments box whether its is for cars with M-techniks i think or non m-techniks. You obviously want the ones with m-techniks or whatever they call msport |

Not sure what bmw would charge for 1 spring but i would feel a bit uneasy buying just 1 spring from euro car parts or similar.
Surely replacing 1 spring is going to knock how everything is sitting out of place?

Thanks
Spoke to BMW and they just said it was msport suspension. Cost was 130 for one spring which I thought was ok. I'm going to get a pair from europarts (£110) as it does list them for cars with m-tech and standard, so they should be good.. Tanks jase At least then I have the same setup left and right Just need to find someone to come out a fit it now or get a tow into town Thanks again! |
