I don't know much about the GTi, but I'd say its pretty much a drivers race..

I have a friend with an older 1.8 GTI and he has a few mods and from 0-60 we were near even and after that I would walk him. I also have a friend with a GTI VR6 and I murder him off the line but from a roll its close but I still pull in the upper speeds. Down at lower speeds they are quick and have close gear ratios but as the speed picks up the BMW's walk away faster and faster.
If its just the base GIT they run mid 6 second 0-60. And the 328i is rated for like 6.8 0-60 (auto) and I stick with cars that have rated 0-60 in 5.5-6.2 seconds and only after about 70 they being to pull. But when you factor in manual transmissions it comes down to the driver. A lot of times my friends with the GTI's miss shift, I have even miss shifted in their cars, the base 1.8 GTI gear box is very lose and easy to miss shift, the VR6 has what seemed to me light a tighter more refined gear box. I would only race a manual car from a 5mph roll never off the line, off the line you factor in too much driver skill. |

the GTI hits 0-60 in low 6 seconds ( 6.2, 6.4). but with FWD its hard to get traction. would be a drivers race, unless he has DSC with launch control you should take him from a standstill. I would guess from a roll he would sneak ahead.

I agree, i think it is going to be close. i have been reading about both cars.
I am a better driver when it comes to manual, plus i drove bmw's for 8 yrs and been to many autocross events and track events, my buddy never has been. We are going to wait until the spring time when i have my run-flats back on and we are going to take it to the track to compare. |

Manufacterers claimed 0-60s for the cars are 7s GTI (6.9 with DSG) and 6.3 for the 328i manual according to the manual of both cars, I almost bought a GTI so I have the brochure lying around and that's what it claims too I haven't raced his GTI yet but I've raced 2 other stock GTIs and one which looked like it had quite a few mods and beat all 3. |

It would be a drivers race. Do not follow VW's rating for the 0-60 times as they rate kind of high. C&D managed 5.5 on the .:R32 and 6.2 on the GTI. Then again, it is a manual, and people screw up.
Have fun out there and for you people comparing which car to have, it's a totally different type of car so don't get your heads in and over your pants. |

I managed to clock 5.93 sec on my 328i...then again I've been racing for 4 years now and I changed up my rims and tires. BMW is often modest in their 0-60 claims, so you should prob win if you don't miss a shift.
