Advice needed: Hit and run

Was sat in the car today waiting for the Mrs to do her shopping. A mid age women who parked in front reversed into me and pushed my car backwards, she didn't stop pushing my car until I horned at her. I got out of the car to check the damaged and she started doing a 3 point turn. Didn't want to talk to me and tried to wave me off when I approached. I blocked her way and she threatened to run me over, so I turned my back on her and she reversed and sped off. I never knew you could spin the tyre in a people carrier until today... She got a teenage girl in the car too who had more sense than her in my opinion.

All I wanted was an apology anyway, as I thought my car was not damaged at the time.

I managed to remember her reg before she sped off and got some really helpful witness who can up to me afterwards offering her registration and even gave me their details in case I needed a witness.

So I went to the police and did a statement, was told that they will write to the register owner asking for who the driver is. All I have to do is wait to be contacted via a letter.

She did some damage to my front bumper, as shown in the picture below:

Should I notify my insurer straight away? My insurance is up for renewal next month and I don't really want the premium to go up. As I've heard that even it is no fault of your own they may still increase it.

The damage is only minor so I can live with it. Hopefully she is insured and her insurance will sort it out.

So do you think I should notify my insurer now? And what is the likely outcome of this?

for the hassle of the damage i would live with it and pay to fix it myself which should only be a respray...police will not give you her address for you to ask her for money privately to fix it as insurance excess will be more for her probably so privately would be the best way.

i wouldnt bother mate as stating next year you had an accident for something like that is silly

yep why should you pay for it yourself cause some stupid c*nt done that and drove off but its not worth the hassle

Make sure there's no hidden damage then if possible see if you can get her to pay up without involving insurance.

That's annoying! I thought I could claim through her insurance without involving mine. Literally got 3 weeks to go before my renewal.

Thanks! I will ring my garage on Monday and book it in just to be sure there is no hidden damage.

Would it affect my NCB if I told my insurer? As I didn't make a claim against my insurance?

I would have it fixed privately as it looks minor. Take lots of photos and keep the receipts. Then when you hear back from the police, try and get their insurance to refund you. I wouldn't involve your insurance as you'll only end up getting shafted at premium renewal for something that wasn't your fault.

This is disgraceful, I really hope the police deliver. Sorry this happened to you.

If you involve your insurer, given your so close to your renewal, you will likely lose your NCB and your premium will increase as the claim will be "unresolved".

Once (if!) the insurance company manages to get the other party to admit responsibility and repair the car you should get the NCB restored.

Furthermore, even if you retain your NCB, a non-fault claim will almost always increase your premium, as statistically it makes you more of a risk.

Thanks for all the quick response guys!! Really appreciated.

Sounds like my best bet is to respray it at my own cost and hope she would get done for hit and run by the police. (Some justice is better than none.)

I don't see why I should pay more for my insurance even it is not my fault, I guess life is never fair. On the bright side, no one was hurt.

Top part will buff out

For the cracked paint id raise the number plate up by 10mm to cover it

There wont be any hidden damage so i wouldnt worry about that

Then id sit and wait if anything comes back from police

Its good to be cautious about things...but there is nothing much under that bumper. And I can assure you that there will be no hidden damage!

Wait for 2-3 weeks. If no luck from police then follow this or get it resprayed.

Lady should be prosecuted for hit and run case.... isn't it?

OP, sorry to hear and hope you find a reasonable solution.

You don't need to tell your insurer.

Contact accident management companies all you need to tell them is you was involved in a hit n run, you were stationary, you got witness and reported it to the Police.

If you want PM me to use the company Ive used in the past.

You would think she would be prosecuted but not always the case. I had someone hit my car when it was parked and had someone not have gotten her reg when she stopped to check her own vehicle I would have been shit out of luck. On reporting it to the police I wanted her done for it they told me that was up to them and she wasn't charged. Bitch.

Sounds like a solution, what do they actually do on behalf of you? And I guess they would take a commission?

They claim off third party insurer and get a commission of your injury if you wish to claim.

Perhaps ask the police if they will give you the insurance details of the vehicle registration you supplied them with?? Or find someone in the insurance industry with access to the MID database - this gives you policy numbers and insurers when you type vehicle registrations in.

Don't tell your insurance, it's not required. The only reason they want you to is so they can give an excuse to put your premium up. You can go to a solicitor no win no fee basis and they will track down the owner of the car and put a claim in against them. Hopefully they have insurance which is there to pay out for the repairs to your car.

If the police aren't helpful then you can obtain insurance details this way - www.askmid.com

Once you get that, call up the third party insurers, tell them what happened, and that you have an independent witness willing to provide a statement - I was once a claims handler and I would rather pay a third party who contacted us direct then through their sols etc and have to pay their fees too..
