opinions on my proposed upgrade
new to the forum, and have read alot about this upgrade, now i'm just looking for answers to my own questions
My bmw (320D E90 2005 RHD UK) has the base stereo with a professional headunit. (no tweeters just 6 speakers) My proposed set-up Equipment to buy: 1. focal 100krs front speakers 2. Vibe slick 4 for the rear deck. 3. jl audio cleansweep cl441dsp 4. technics harness Equipment i own: 1. Jbl gto-504ez amp to power the speakers 2. JL audio 500/1 to power a jl audio w13w3v3 in the boot. Disconnect underseat subs and leave disconnected. I plan on using a jl cleansweep cl441dsp combined with technics harness although i may decide to add underseat subs in the future which means i will need to purchase a new amp as the jbl amp will not be able to power front, rear and underseat. As i already own the two amps and subs i do not want to be buying more equipment as i paid alot for what i already have I want to know if people this this will be a good setup and what changes you would make thanks all Last edited by jai_raider; 06-04-2015 at 12:34 PM.. |

Disconnecting the under seats is a mistake
Disconnecting the under seats is a mistake
Replacing all the fronts with one of the newer three way kits(doors and floors) is a better choice . ( Jehnert , Gladen, Diamond Audio, mbquart.) Spending money are rear speaker is not a good idea either. You will have no mid range at all and Focals don't play that low. You would be better off running those channels on the floors with one of the three way kits. For local help this guy. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=704363 He can recode you to Hi Fi if you want it. And also is a stereo expert and will not Hose you with BS. Thanks for your reply ctuna
I think i am going down the Gladen route, keeping the rear speakers stock. Now i'm just on the hunt for a affordable Gladen kit!! hopefully one comes by soon. They seem very rare over here in the UK, (at an affordable price anyway) just a question, if i recode to HI-FI will i lose any of the integrated functions? pdc etc i'm sure i read somewhere recoding to HI-FI i will lose some stuff that i can not go back to, may i just read the wrong post |

Gladen is a German Company so I would think they would be easier to get in Europe. I have never been a fan of Focals. Overpriced mainstream for what you get. (Similar to JL) Take a look at the Gladens, Morel, MB Quart... Even CDT has some pretty good component sets that out perform the Focals, imo.
If you are going the route of a DSP, I dont believe there is much need to re-code, but I could be wrong. Also, unless you have to have JL for the DSP, there are much better units for similar prices. PPI and Soundstream both have very good DSPs in that same price range. |

The gladen kit i am hoping to purchase will have
front speakers & tweeters, underseat subs gladen oem harness a dsp amp to power all so in that case as my JL amp can support all inputs ( i believe) i will just need to add an addition Y splitter to the RCA's on the gladen harness so i can connect my JL sub and amp aswell (the amp and sub i already own from my previous car so no point spending more money) |

Don't disconnect the under seat woofers! If you want to have midrange or any sort of bass, this is where you will be getting it unless you add a trunk sub. The locations under the seat aren't ideal, but we don't have much choice in the E90/E92 chassis. My suggestion would be to purchase an entire kit such as the Gladen or Jehnert Flatline kit, that way you get door speakers, tweeters, crossovers, and under seat woofers that are made to work together. As far as an amp is concerned, get a JL Audio xd400/4 or JL Audio xd600/6 and you would probably be able to run your entire setup with this, granted it may be a little underpowered but better than stock.

Recoding to Hi Fi does not loose options but
Recoding to Hi Fi does not loose options but there can
be issues with the PDC volume being to loud or soft. This depends on how or if you amplify the rears and or if you have front PDC Sensors. I don't know the details of the fixes. You mean as in the Gladen/Mosconi kit from these guys. http://www.monsteraudiodesign.co.uk/ http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=822366 |

I agree with everyone else don't get rid of the underseats. If anything get rid of the rears they are useless unless you have pdc. The Jehnert or Gladen Kit would be a good choice with a 4-6 channel amp and a dsp is somewhat optional. If you are looking for a new amp an alpine pdx v9 will power everything. It does 100watts x4 and 500watts x1 at both 2 or 4 ohms. |

Thank you all for your help
A quick update of what I have decided Front speakers, underfloor sub, dsp amp http://www.monsteraudiodesign.co.uk/ Also adding another sub in the trunk with an amp Jl 500/1 to power JL 13w3v3 I'd say I have completed 80% of the installation now, just waiting for a few more bits as I don't want to cut any oem wires etc |
