Lux LED AE v6 help on Pre-Lci e90

Hi All,

okay so I've done LED AE swaps on e90's often enough that I know what to do. However, the new Lux LED AE's v6 that I got from BMS are a little interesting. The two connectors are not on the rear of the housing... but rather two wires on the top of the unit (Red and black wire).

The car's wires are Brown and Green:
* I'm guessing Brown --> Black
* I'm guessing Red --> Green

The wires are now very loose and the brown wire connector is an uncovered metal connector that seems like it can short against the housing of the AE???

I also have another issue that I need to resolve

The AE cover cap barely fits over the new Lux v6 LED AE... but it does fit. I tried to route the wires on each side so they won't touch... I'm still concerned about the brown wire touching the housing. Should I have used electrical tape to protect the connections??

I wish these things came with a piece of paper that showed some install instructions or at least a link to the vendor's site with a video/instructions/pics of the install... rather than hoping forum members do all the work for them

from someone that has experience... you think the pre-lci e90 are worth adding LED to? I'd like a brighter ring, and I know they tend to stay evenly lit instead of the inner ring being way brighter (I hate that)

Am I really looking at near $200 to get a decently brighter ring that won't burn out in a year, kill FM signal, throw warning messages, etc etc?

Once I get some time to learn how to take apart my headlights... I would be interested in doing that. I can't really say it's practical for me to spend about $1k on farming out headlight upgrades for an older car... But I don't mind getting the parts and DIY once I learn how to do it and have some time with the car. As it is the ride is a daily driver for my wife so I can't really have much down time on it.

sorry, I meant adding LED bulbs

I'd really like actual LED rings, but the sedans are near impossible to open, and I don't really want to mess with it

yup... I know what you mean and that is my preference too...

I would like to retrofit the newer square headlights, paint the inside, and lots more... until such time that I can tinker... I'm stuck with simple upgrades.

So I got a response back from Lux saying that has been their normal design for about 9 years now. Also that nothing will short out with the metal connector against the housing. I'm now confident that this should be a good fit.

I had the same concern so I covered the connectors with heat shrink tubing when I installed them.

i did the install and everything seems to be working well. i just need to clear the 50 counter short circuit from my old AE on my driver side using tool32 and all will be good in the world.

i just fixed my AE short circuit using tool32.exe and i must say these new v6 lux AE's for the PreLCI are by far the best i have seen color/brightness wise!

I've already gone thru like 3 sets of 2 led BMS bulbs, 2 sets of 4 led bulbs, and now on to this Lux v6 4 led bulb. i hope they can last in my car for over a year before failing.

Keep me posted as to whether you were able to resolve the errors on the car too. I want to see how these new ones work for you

yup, i got it working: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=625111

just an FYI, the error condition i had was nothing to do with the LUX AE's, it was from my previous AE which got disconnected and caused a short. the car has a short circuit counter and it attempts a few times to restore power to the bulb but eventually gives up if the counter gets high (so it just permanently shuts off the power to that bulb). but resetting that counter, i am telling the car to try again to use the bulb...

they look great!

Taking the headlights apart is no small task. I considered it but like most people here its my daily. If you mess up and get water damage your f**ked. haha
