06 330i Rattle Question, just started[I searched]...Now with Video!!!
There are two noises now
1. You can hear right when I stop the car, it sounds like a chirping noise like a belt tensioner / pulley 11 second mark, You can really hear it at the 17 second markthen it happens until I finish backing into my drive way, this noise happens while parked for a couple of seconds then goes away, going forward, going back etc... 2. The second sounds like a heat shield 13 second mark, it gets loud on slowing down, not accelerating, while stopped at a traffic light, stopped after driving for a while, etc... Each noise gets louder with duration and type of driving Last edited by Burnall4; 06-13-2015 at 11:24 AM.. Reason: Trying to Embed the video |

anybody?!
The car goes in on Monday, but I would like to try and figure this out so I can minimize the cost of Monday's visit. Car goes in the air as soon as it cools off |

I get the same BS rattle in my e90 330i. Ironically same color
I get the 13 second one it probably is the heat shield and I'm saying that because when I hit the gas a little it goes away. Been like that for like 2 years but only comes on randomly and can't tell with windows up. |

Thanks for the response, i don't mind it with the windows up because I can't hear it, but I have gotten some weird stares. I am also pretty anal when it comes to keeping my cars as close to perfect working order as possible. |

I would get the car onto a lift and try and see if there is anything loose - could be a heat shield, as mentioned, or exhaust brackets, but check as much as you can that may be able to cause a rattle. The belt tensioner is plausible, so I would check that too.
Hope you find the culprit! |

So here is a little update; I got the car in the air, i poked and prodded and couldn't find a single thing loose. Then I decided, well shit, the car is up in the air I might as well do the "golf tee mod". So I do the mod, and the "heat shield rattle went away". However, the exhaust muffler needs to be replaced, so that just means I can get a full catback exhaust As for the other noise, it only comes after driving the car for a while. It goes into the shop tomorrow. Time to start bringing the car back to perfection thanks to whom ever suggested the rattle (heat shield sound in the video) being caused by the exhaust flats/actuator. - Burn |

I haven't done the golf-tee mod on mine, but I did experiment with disconnecting the plug behind the left tail light housing which disables this (stores a fault though which didn't bother me at the time), but I couldn't live with the extra exhaust drone after a few days of driving like this, so plugged back in. Have the golf-tee mod on my recently bought E46 330i and it's quite nice on that car... |
