Sumitomo HTR Z III prices

Hi guys -

was about to pull the trigger on some Sumi's for a second set of wheels last week, but was waiting on the ol' paycheck.

Tire Rack had the 235/265 (19") combo with a good price on the fronts and a GREAT price on the rears... but as of today, that is no longer the case.

Does anyone know (can comment) on why the rears jumped (almost $50/tire) over the weekend? I am guessing that I had a "coulda, shoulda, woulda" moment, and I am just SOL now.

BUT, i figured I would ask everyone for their thoughts, and see if Gary@TireRack chimes in as well.

I believe they were on sale previously which is why they were marked down a little. Overstock maybe? I picked up a set, the price was just too good to pass up.

yeah... I am kicking myself now. Granted at $710 shipped for a set (235/265) still isn't bad, but at $615 shipped, it was even better!

There was no price jump on current production tires. However, we had a small batch of 2011 production year tires that we sold at a discount since they were four years old which quickly sold out.

Thanks, Gary, for the info. I sorta figured that was what was going on... moving out old stock. The current price is still great, and every review I read seems to be good.

I am torn between those and a set of the nitto 555's through a local vendor.

Hello Gary...

Any specials on Sumitomos 225/255 18's going on right now?

BTW... What can you tell me about the quality of the Sumitomos compare to others like Michelins, Pirellis and Continentals?

Thanks

Quality has been outstanding on these tires, but grip levels and wear aren't as high as some of the top tier tires from Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone, etc.

Sumitomos are garbage. I don't understand why people always want to got cheap on tires. Its one of the most important things on a car.

Be wary of harpooning an entire brand of tires. Despite its age, the HTRZIII is actually a pretty decent max performance summer tire. It even performed quite well against a couple of popular forum tire choices in its class a few years back in our testing :

don't worry Gary.. I've read enough threads on here to know how some members are. A lot of them think one bad experience with anything makes the product the worst ever. I take all responses as an opinion and from there I make my own decision.

@ underground6to9... I have 219m Wheels on Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 (non ZP) right now. I was not impress with them as everyone else on here are. Don't get me wrong, they are great tires and I would buy them again (if they kept making them. Now they make PSS instead). But for me, my E90 328i is a daily driver, no track days, no speeding and no racing. I just like the looks of the 219m wheels on my car. That's why in my case Sumitomo HTRZIII are a good choice.

I put them on my 335i yesterday, $550.00 installed for all four corners. The ride is way better then the run flats. I am in Phoenix PM me if you need the name of the shop.
