Need help adjusting a noisy MFactory Ring'n pinion set

Hello,

some time ago I bought a 3,08 Mfactory LSD together with their own manufactured Ring'n pinion set (not a machined OEM BMW gear set).
I've installed it with solid subframe bushings and black Powerflex diff bushings. I expected to get some whine from this mods, as most people have already stated, but not that noisy.

First I've had some problems to get the backlash down to the desired specs (around 0,007mm / 0,003") as you need modified adjusting C-clips and additional shims to get that close
(with the factory shims I've had 0,39mm backlash, that was way to much).

Problem is it always was noisy as hell, even now with the correct backlash and acceptable wear pattern on the ring gear.
From 80km/h (50mph) it starts to be unbearable with the peak at 140km/h (80mph). On light load it makes the most noise, like teeth grinding together. Off load it's almost quiet.

My concern is about wearpattern on the pinion, as it touches only on the small outer end, means half of the pinion is not engaged at all, please see my pics.

So my Questions to those who know how it should look are:

- Is it possible that the wear pattern on the ring is correct when on the pinion's it's off? Could it be a badly machined gear set?
- Or do I need to move the pinion more towards the ring gear to get a better wear pattern on the pinion and accept the change this gives me on the ring gear?

Any suggestions are welcome, if there is no solution I need to machine my own OEM gearset an see what I get then.

None of our race cars with OEM gears sets make noise like this and they all are full poly and solid bushings. WHINE yes, noise NO.

Thanks

Steve

Thanks,

but the FAQ's are nice for global information on LSD's but the part on installation is incomplete.

If you post your query or link to this thread, in that thread, Stephen should get back to you.

Maybe it's just me but there looks like some abnormal wear on both the ring and pinion.

That's what I think too, problem is that it's not wear, it has not been driven and made noises from the first moment.

What do you specially notice?
