As above
If you open your front ashtray it should show you roughly when the car started its production as the parts bin tend to be within 4 weeks or so (unless we are talking holiday periods). Other parts around the car are also stamped in the same way.

You can get to the manufacturing date via the secret menu:
1. Push and hold in the mileage reset button, whilst putting in the key. 2. 01. Should appear in the centre of the dashboard 3. Release the reset button until 01. Changes to 01.00 4. Push the reset button until 01.04 appears. It should read KI HSTLDATUM and a date. Not sure what KI means, but I think HSTL is short for Hersteller, which means manufacturer. |

I talking about the mileage reset button, which is to the bottom left of the speedo, not the ODC button on the end of the indicator stick.
If you push in the rest mileage button without the key in, it will just display the temperature, time and mileage. But if you hold the reset button in and put the key in, the dash centre displays the hidden menu: Release the rest button and wait until the 01. changes to 01.00, then press the reset button until 01.04 and you will get your manufacturer date date |

Carl, you need to press the mileage reset button NOT the ODC button on the indicator stalk. Read Art Man's post carefully and you will understand

Is the date shown the date production started or the date production was complete?

I'm not sure. As you can see mine is the 18th May, the sticker on the bonnet states June 2006 and I was driving my car at the end of June. So I think the sticker is when it left BMW works and the 18th when the order is released to production, but it could be when the battery is connected and the car first comes into life. Personally I like to think of it as the latter, the day it was "born".
