High-flow primary cat

I just had my secondary cats replaced with straight pipe and am entertaining the idea of getting a high flow cat for the primary. Has anyone done this yet and noticed any gains?

Can anyone help me out with which Magnaflow cat part number is a direct or universal fit? I feel in way over my head when browsing their selection.

I'm sure, but I didn't have much luck with a search, every thread seems to wander towards header talk.

The headers are catted if you're talking about primaries.

I think OP is looking for high flow cat options that don't require changing the headers. Is this possible, or are aftermarket headers the only way to change the primary cats?

Yes exactly, headers are out of my budget. I didn't think to look how the primary cat was mounted when the car was on the lift at the exhaust shop, or if there are 1 or 2 primary cats. I'm thinking its not worth the trouble but curious anyways.

There no primary cat options except gutting them or doing a full on header swap.

The primary cat is part of the header setup coming off the engine. Magnaflow cats are discount garbage for cheap cars, avoid them.

To do what the OP is asking, you'd have to remove your factory headers, cut out the factory cats, and weld in some sort of aftermarket cat. it's quite a bit more work than just swapping the headers.

Theoretically - would you need to do this as well just to gut the cats?

I've seen threads where people will actually gut the primary stock cats for better flow. Not sure what the dyno results say - however, it is an option.

Because no one is willing to actually spend the money needed to get something worthwhile like HJS.

Here is a hi flow Magnaflow CAT I pulled off a friend's Miata last week. Tell me if you can spot the issue:

Is there a point of even calling that a 'cat' anymore? Just looks like a bloated pipe with a hole in the middle?

gutting a cat isn't a good idea either. the exhaust will lose all its velocity due to the huge expansion in volume. I'd wager a gutted cat actually loses performance vs just leaving it alone, especially with them placed so close to the primaries on the stock manifolds.

IMO - either do headers or don't bother messing with it at all.
