318i N43 Timing Chain Dissaster

Hi I have the N43 engine 318i E91 2008, 88k Miles

I was having issues with the oil pressure warning light coming on at idle after a long drive with fault code 30C1.

In trying to diagnose the issue someone suggested changing the chain tensioner as BMW have upgraded them to apply more pressure.

When i removed the old tensioner i heard something collapse inside. The car was taken to my local BMW specialist and they removed the timing chain and found that the lower plastic guide had shattered and bits of plastic were everywhere! It looks like these plastic guides are not man enough for the job and are breaking when the chain stretches a bit. The plastic fragments were getting to the oil pump reducing the pressure and giving me the faults.

Overall it is costing me a fortune to have the engine stripped down, and all the plastic removed then new chain, tensioner and guides installed. Hopefully the pump is ok!!!

So if you get similar faults to me, do not ignore them get the timing chain guides checked out asap.

Dear cjcurtis

I have the N43b20 engine on my e93 320i 04/2010 with 50.000KM on the clock, i have no check engine light coming, however there is a rattling sound coming from the engine compartement it is higher and more noticeable when i let off the gas pedal

It is the same if the car is moving or stand still, i removed the alternator belt and power steering electric plug to isolate the problem but the problem is still. It is like metal sound

Please could you tell me what was your symptoms ? I don't have low oil pressure indication, could it be my chain tensioner or the chain and guide itself?

Help me out to figure how many labor hours should that thing cost and parts involved so at least i know what to expect in total when i go to the dealer.

Best Regards
