Oil consumption
I am wondering what the average oil consumption is for the N54. I have heard of guys having to add a full quart btw oil changes. Is that normal? I was told last week I have a small leak in the Valve cover area.

Depends how the car is driven. If you track it a lot, or drive it hard, you'll burn more oil naturally.
I'm in the same position as Jeff, I do mine every 5k so I never add oil. |

I lose about a quart every 5-6k miles which is how often I change it, so I usually never need to add oil between changes.

You shouldn't be consuming much oil unless you have an accompanying leak or seepage from a myriad of possible locations: oil pan, ofhg, tstat gasket, valve cover, rear Main seal, or any number of oil lines, etc.

Mine has also been a quart every 1000 miles or so. I guess at this rate I should only need to change my oil filter, lol Getting my clutch changed soon and will be buying a rear main seal, but I assume it's from the turbos as my car is dry when I changed trans fluid.
Regardless these turbos have been run relatively hard for 3-4 years on meth and now on e85 making 420-440 whp and they still meet high boost targets. These 100,000 mile original turbos are pretty impressive. But after the 335is clutch is put in I'm gonna really try to see what they can take |

Most manufacturers that i'm aware of say that in general, one quart every one thousand miles is considered normal. That doesn't mean every vehicle does that but if it does, happy motoring!!!

Just about to add my 2nd quart per my cars request. Im about 5k from my last oil change and 6k in from being FBO. Mobil-1 0w-40. I know for a fact im burning oil, but i haven't been able to source it out yet. Regardless, TONS of wastegate rattle but the car is running fine.

Sorry but i had to bump this as a new to the BMW car and forum member.
As a Noob, I'm glad I used the search function to see if this was normal or not and now I know. I've been burning about 1 qt every 1000 miles or so, at first this kind of alarmed me as I began trying to see if i had any leaks anywhere of which thank God that I don't. I love how knowledgeable people are on this forum about cars in general but especially the BMW 335is, I'm no car/mechanical guru so i will be feeding off of everything you guys throw out there. Thanks. |

I have seen it drop by about 1/4 quart previously, but my oil filter gasket gave up. Since its replaced all is good. Time for an oil change!!

For BMW spark-ignition and diesel engines, the maximum permissible engine oil consumption is 0.7 l/1000 km (1.7 quarts per 1000miles). - BMW Service bulletin
So anything under around 2 quarts per 1000 miles should be fine. |
