Satnav - Fast, efficient, short

Anyone know exactly what the difference is between the fast, efficient and short route options?

As it says on the tin:

Fast - as in fastest time route
Short - as in shortest distance route
Efficient - most economical on fuel (which might be longer, but involve steady 50-60mph roads rather than shorter and lots of 30mph roads)

I wonder if efficient could also avoid hilly routes...

If you look at the actual figures you can see exactly what the distance/time differences are also if you select each one you can see the route change on the map.

So I commute a fair bit out of London, I generally have my TomTom 1005 set to Eco routes, which seems to be very similar to the fastest route anyway. While driving to Italy last year, I tried to map a route for fastest vs eco and they where both pretty much the same route. So I think you'd be happy using either of those options.

If I come into London the fast route will not take me round the M25. Instead it takes me on A roads to the north circular. Taking traffic into account that is not a fast route. Its less miles, but takes more time. Despite the M25 being longer I would say it was more efficient (unless turned into a car park) as you are not stop starting in traffic and it is also quicker time wise. That is what was confusing me. Obviously it does not factor traffic, so you have take this into account yourself and ignore the route the satnav is directing, which kind of defeats the objective.

Yep, you have to use your initiative, depending on where i'm going I select different routes.
