Thoughts on installing JB4 on a car with 125k miles??

The car is a 2009 335i that seems to have been maintained really well. Oil gaskets, fuel pump, spark plugs, water pump, injectors, valve cover, and belts have been changed. Would you consider this enough maintenance for the car to run reliably with a tune?

What other parts need to be replaced with this many miles?

Thanks

Only way to find out is to do it. If you bought a BMW with 125k miles on it and expected reliability, you are in for a rude awakening.

Also, how long ago were all those things replaced? They may be due for replacement again, and a tune is going to make that sooner rather than later. Also, I dont see Turbos on that list so get ready to replace them with or without a tune.

I have 125k miles an it runs like new. e40 tune and intercooler with more to come. I have had it since 68k miles. Since then I've replaced the oil filter housing gasket and original water pump at 120k miles (spark plugs and oil changes of course). Turbos were replaced at 70k miles under warranty (didn't fix rattle at all). VW GTI before this car I upgraded the turbo at 120k miles 300whp (80 more than stock turbo)...car ran like new (it was also an 07' german car). Car before than VR6 150k miles....ran like new. Internal wear on German cars aren't even close to being worn out at 125k miles if oil is changed at least on schedule. Everything around the long block is going to fail miserably but that is going to happen whether you leave it stock or modify it.

I would go for it! Run map 5, let it autotune, do some logs and see how it looks/runs.

My car ran fine, but the tune exposed the weak points pretty quick(misfires) when installing at 68k. Had to replace injectors and soon after did the spark plugs and the car has been great ever since. These weak points would have caught up with me with or without a tune, so it didn't matter to me.

Good luck!

You've addressed virtually all the main weak points on the N54 when boosting higher than stock. Only variable I see not listed are the turbos. Have they been replaced? I'm almost positive by that mileage they would've been done.

If so, slap on a tune and enjoy! 125k on the motor itself is nothing. It's the accessories that go with time/abuse (which you've done all but the turbos).

3k miles ago for most of the work. The fuel pump was replaced under warranty. Turbos were not replaced. Might be a good indicator that the previous owner took care of the car, right?

What about the timing chain? At how many miles should that be adjusted/replaced?

If you have doubts about the engine's condition, get a compression and leakdown test done.

You might also send an oil sample to Blackstone (or other lab) for analysis.

Buy a 3rd party warranty and find a good mechanic and mod it and drive the piss out of it. Life is too short to baby these cars and worry about what might break. Mostly tho the items that fail are wear items and it wouldn't have really mattered if you drove it hard or babied it. The long block is strong and mine feels better at 100k miles then most domestics do brand new.

The miles on the motor are not a concern to me. Keep in mind your spark plugs, coils, injectors and fuel pumps will be pushed beyond what they are normally used to; so if there is any weak spot in the hardware, the tune will bring that out as it requires all parts in optimum condition.

No one here can tell you for sure what you need as all cars wear and are maintained different. Throw it on and see what happens. At a minimum you will need to change your spark plugs if they have over 25,000 miles on them.

Lots of N54 with over 100k are running FBO aggressive tunes without a problem, mine has 110k and is has been running 20psi for the last 40k miles.
Get the Jb4 do some logs and we can let you know if everything looks good.

I agree with Jeff.. Miles on a motor are not the end all. If everything was maintained well you should have no issues. Lots of 100,000+ FBO cars running around.

I've got almost 112k on the clock right now - had to replace spark plugs, injectors, and coolant hoses - car leaks (and consumes) a relatively small amount of oil, but other than that - runs pretty strong for it's age. Just keep up on regular maintenance and you shouldn't run into any issues. (Speaking of which, time to order a new belt)

I bought mine with 113k miles on the clock some months ago. I picked it up and drove it straight to an indy for walnut blasting of the intake valves. If you have not done that already, it's an absolute must especially for those miles.

The engine and turbos are strong, but like others have said it's the stuff around it that will give out. So far I've replaced the oil filter housing gasket, valve cover gasket, and now my oil pan gasket is leaking.

Been running a JB4 G5 ISO for about 3 months and it's great. What type of spark plugs are you running and what gap are they at? My VRSF DPs just arrived, just waiting to schedule an appointment with my indy for installation. I'll probably do the oil pan gasket at the same time.
