To Trim, or not to trim
After finishing the first one, the wife and I had a "difference of opinion" on what should happen with the second. I told her I could get some internet opinions, even international ones. So I expect some Belgian, Finnish, and Canadian opinions, at the very least.
Wild is the first one, boxed is the second |

Trim the sides, a good landing strip will point the idiots the right way to enter your house.
In plants, I do prefer a wild bush, makes the groomed elements pop more next to them. This rule naturally stands only with plants.

Damn, I when she is right about the outside (my domain). And No, it's not that I mind trimming them, I just like the ficus better when it is wild and drapes down. Not a single vote for wild. |

^^^ This.
They both look like degrees of "untrimmed" to me. That close to a building, I like the one that looks more "groomed" better than the less "groomed" one. In the right settings, I'd prefer the "shaggy" looking one over the "dandy" one, but the setting you pictured isn't one of them. All the best.

Oh, and for the record, the boxed one was about 10 minutes work after work, with hand shears. Since I didn't want to really trim them that much, I didn't break out the electric clippers.
About 15 feet out of frame near the back door, the night-blooming jasmine bushes are almost perfectly squared up with the door and edge of the driveway. Each time I cut them, I tell them again "Grow all you want, right up to this line, then I have to cut you back again" |

Yard work of any kind suck - wild and free for me.
That goes for cutting grass as well...but the Mrs will never see it my way.

If you remove the bush altogether, your house will look bigger.
