The elbow furthest from the throttle body is not removable on 09+ so they make the hard pipe go all the way to the up pipe from the inter cooler and used a straight coupler to connect it. On 08 and earlier the elbow is removable from the charge pipe and can be used to connect the short version charge pipe to the up pipe. Basically the long version can be used on all n54 years and the short can only be used on models before 08.
