Engine Temperature Warning (Amber)

So today on the drive in to work (which happens to be the hottest day of the year - today's high with humidity is estimated to be 40*C), my Engine Temperature Warning (Amber) light came on - "Temperature Too High, Drive Moderately to allow engine to cool down ...." I could hear my fans working overdrive but thought this had to do with the A/C being on along with "stop & go traffic". At the time the warning light came on, the outside temperature was only 24.5*C

No codes were tripped nor did I ever receive the "Red" Engine Temperature Warning.

Question I have is do you think was do to the outside temperature or is there any upcoming problem (ie: water pump) that I should be concerned about?
If the water pump or thermostat fails, does it trip an engine code?

Any thoughts?

Car is a E92 N55 2011 335Xi w/ 50K miles

Definitely water pump/thermostat. I would replace both.

Can confirm, just had mine done.

OP, don't drive it until you read the codes!

Well first check to see if you have coolant cause these cars are notorious for drinking it.

If you have coolant then get ready to replace water pump and t stat.

Check for coolant / leaks , if all looks good check your waterpump.
It is probably your waterpump, replaced mine same time last year

No codes have been registered (yet)
Does the water pump or thermostat failure trip a code?

Eventually they store codes.
You should get the car checked even if you do no have any codes

Not always. Sometimes it trips a code only after you are stranded on the side of the road.

Like I said, check coolant. Then likely assume you need the water pump if coolant checks out OK.

How many miles are you at? I've seen lots of water pump failures, but they seem to be more common 07/08 model years.

+1

If you are over 70-80K you are definitely due...

If you do get the RED warning make sure to stop right away!

Water pump most likely. Take advice above and check coolant levels, i've had mine go orange for a 12 mile trip then all the sudden red. Dont wait for codes.

Perform the auto-bleed procedure and see if the pump is circulating coolant by looking into the coolant reservoir, you will see coolant flowing. My dead pump sounded like this when it died.

So on my way home I checked coolant levels and I was slightly below min (car cold). So I drove to my local dealer and when checked there I was in between min and max (due toexpansion). They topped up a little coolant for me and I was on my way. No warning messages on my way home and according to my Dashcommand OBDII app, I went as high as 232F and low as 223F w/ A/C on in stop and go traffic - seems like normal operating temperatures?

Does anyone know at what temps the Amber and Red messages are triggered?

Amber / red messages dont necessarily show up at high temps. When my water pump went out, they showed up well below 200f, as i had just left home. Left SHADOW codes 2e81 and 82.

Ps, oops i meant oil temps , dont know what my coolant temps were, but i was barely 10mi from home. 223-232f for you seems high, because mine doesnt go above 190 i think.

Mine didn't even sound that loud when it died, sounded like a half dead toad under the hood

Here's a little update .....
So the past week was driving as normal - no amber or red temp. warning messages and coolant temps didn't go over 230*F (on very hot and humid days). However, today on the ride into the office, everything was normal but I did notice the cooling fans cycle on and off for 1-2 secs max when I started up the car from sitting overnight. I thought that was odd as the car was completely cold? So I continued on my way and everything was fine, temps at 190*F-200*F and then they went from 200*F - 210*F and climb real quick. At 250*F amber warning message came on and then a 255*F red message came on – both messages only stayed on for a few seconds. I pulled over right away and shut the car down. I let it cool for a little and watched the temps drop and since I was about 5 mins from the office, I started the car up again and everything was normal (no higher than 225*F). When I pulled in the office, I noticed again the cooling fans cycle on and off for 1-2 secs

I’m going to pickup a new waterpump, thermostat, hardware and coolant from the dealer today and get those changed out tonight

Any ideas on why the fans would cycle on and off for 1-2 secs – especially when the car was cold?

May I ask what gauge you are using to note water temp? The gauge on your cluster is for oil temps so the only way to know water temp would be through a tune or 3rd party gauge.

These symptoms you have indicate the water pump on the way out, especially the fans cycling on at start up. I'd get it changed before you are stranded.
