Leather Trim Project - Finished
I've always disliked the wood trim in my E92 and planned to wrap it or paint it more like piano black. That was until I saw that Ben was selling a load of black nappa leather. I reckon black leather trim would suit my extended beige interior far batter than shiny black so I thought I would give it a go. The leather arrived today (thanks Ben) and so far I've covered the door and rear trims and the small section of the dash.
Sorry there's no real before and after photos as I just wanted to get stuck in but you can see the difference in the dash. The door trims are more difficult to see but they really are an improvement over the wood. I'm really chuffed with the way it's turned out so far. More photos when I've done the dash and centre console. All finished. There's 2 ways of doing the centre console: make the holes bigger and wrap the leather around the trim and stick it to the back or cut round the holes as I've done. Cutting round the holes you can see the edge of the leather, but I don't think you notice it to be honest. A new blade is essential though if you're going to get a neat finish. Anything I'm not happy with? The edge around the tray above the gear selector. Because the tray sits underneath the trim, unlike the CIC controller that sits inside the trim, the edge of the leather is more noticeable so in hindsight for this I might have wrapped the leather around the edge. But all in all I'm really pleased with the results. A tip for those with ashtrays in the front, like in the rear of the E92, the lid is obviously curved and would both be a pain to cover in leather and would probably not then open due to the extra thickness of the leather. I sprayed the lid of mine with some mat black Liquid Wrap that I had and in all honesty you have to look hard to notice the difference. And it still works perfectly. The lid comes off the tray which makes it a lot easier to spray with the Liquid Wrap. Last edited by half Colin; 08-03-2015 at 01:01 PM.. |

Ahh - I've been looking for a set of wood trims with a CIC shaped hole since I got my car!
Finally picked up a non-CIC set from eBay last month, and now have to look at covering my existing centre console with leather to match the dakota beige trim, so I look forward to seeing how yours turns out in black. (I've ordered trim samples to try and match the leather on the centre console with the seats). |

Looks well Colin!!
Glad it got to you OK and you've made great progress! Just a tip around the vents. It may be the picture but it looks a little loose as if it's not following the contours of the vent opening. Once you've applied the glue and laid down the leather; use insulating tape to wrap around the edges to ensure that the leather is pulled right into the edges and corners. Leave that to set overnight and then unwrap. Boom! |

Yep, plenty of leather left and once I've sorted out using some to do some other repairs I'll pass it on. 3 or 4 people have already expressed interest in buying enough to do the centre console so I'll probably split it.

Thanks for the comments guys. I think it looks like an OEM finish that BMW should have offered. I've added another photo of the rear console and a tip for the ashtray lid.
Anyway, I've so far got requests for centre console size pieces from: Tom Jim Rudz Let's say £5 a piece. I just need to repair a leather chair first then I can look at how much is left but it should be enough to satisfy all those wanting to do their centre consoles. Not sure about anyone wanting to do the whole trim like mine. |

Damn that looks Colin I was going to look at buying this from Len, but thought the leather would differ too much from the Dakota hide in mine, having seen your end result you now find me kicking myself, looks fab mate
