When I bought my car, the previous owner told me that my car had the comm box, now sorry for my ignorance but what does the comm box actually do? How do I now that my car has it?

The previous owner had an android phone that showed his messages under the 'office' section on the I-drive, for some reason my iPhone doesn't do this.

You mean combox.
For iphone: settings => bluetooth => choose your connection => show notifications must be ticked.
Also you should setup: settings => notifications => messages/mail => allow notifications. Here you have some personal settings as well.
