Wheel Performance: Stagger setup OR same all-around?
I did search and found some input but nothing on point. I previously had an E46 coupe with UUC Sway Bars front and rear, along with KW V2 coilovers. I also had front and rear struts from Active Autowerke. With that said, my wheel setup was 19x8.5 in the front and 19x10 in the rear (Hamann HM2). When i took turns the car handled like a dream, UNTIL the point where the rear would appear to loose traction quite easily and my DSC would come flashing on and off.
Now, I wasn't going 90 in a 30 mph turn or anything, but considering that I wasn't even pushing the turn that hard, traction would seem to be an issue on dry pavement. One friend of mine told it was because it was a staggered setup, the fronts weren't gripping as well. BS? You tell me. Now that I have an E90 i want to do the BBS CHs with M3 staggered setup. Bad idea if I want better performance? Should I go with the same wheel setup all around? Any input is appreciated. Thanks, and I enjoy the boards thoroughly |

I think your friend is tripping on the staggered deal is it just me but why would the fronts being to narrow make you feel like your rear wheels are breaking loose.
I think staggered will offer better handling characteristics by virtue of the larger stance. I think alot of outside influences like tire brand & tread pattern play into this scenario as well as what offsets are the wheels and widths. Also how was your suspension set was it to stiff for the turn & speed etc. etc. But if it were me I would say staggered is a better setup think about it this way most super-cars, or sports cars all come staggered like Ferraris, Porsche, Lambo, etc etc. |

Well, you can go ahead and ignore what you friend said. You described the rear tires were breaking traction, which means you were over steering. This is not caused by having too small of a tire up front, but rather too little traction in the rear and the weight shift you may induce with braking before you enter a corner/ combined with how much throttle input you're giving while in the turn.
There are numerous factors to over steer. The adjustment of your coilovers, stiffness of your sway bars, and your alignment all affect the way you car will behave, Your front sway bars may have been too soft, or you maybe you need more negative camber in the rear. The amount of pressure you have in your tires may also affect understeer/oversteer behavior. Simply put, I don't feel staggered wheel sizes will be detrimental to your car's performance, and you should go with staggered sizes with your BBS CH wheels.

staggered setup's will induce some understeer. Especially on a car that is not a PERFECT 50/50.
