Hmmm...no DISA for my 330?
I have a 2006 330 with 210,000 miles. I've had it for just a few months. Recently the SES light came on, and codes are:
2AA8 Variable Intake System motor actuator 2AA9 Variable Intake System motor actuator 2 2A15 DMTL Superfine leak I was initially directed toward DISA issues, and with all the hype about engine destruction from the DISA failures, I figured I might was well start there. However, I don't think my car has DISA! Initially when the SES light came on I had no issues with how it ran. Now it will stumble with light acceleration, but improves with a heavy throttle. I did notice today when I began the repairs that the intake boot was disconnected between the radiator and the air cleaner, but I doubt that would matter. I took the entire intake off but I don't see a DISA unit. That I guess is good news in that I will get $600+ back in parts I don't need. But what to make of those codes and the poor running then? Thoughts? Also, I notice there is a fair amount of oil in the intake duct, enough for a couple of drops to drip out pretty quick when I sat it on the floor. It will occasionally puff a little oil smoke on start up but then it clears. CCV need replacing? |

The 330i MUST have DISA valves, it was the only reason it made more power than the 325i of the same year.
See this diagram of your intake, part 2 & 3 are the DISA valves (named actuators on real oem): http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=11_3756 Your 2nd picture looks like where one of them would go. Are you saying you had two LARGE holes in your intake where these actuators should have been?!? |

No, I don't see any holes. I am saying they aren't there! Is it possible the PO replaced it with a non DISA intake? Seems like a long shot...
Can you see any DISA parts on my intake? |

You definitely don't have the stock manifold on your car if it is indeed a 2006 330i. Aside from the slight power decrease, I don't see this as a bad thing (from a repair standpoint.
Maybe the PO knew the value of the old manifold and swapped it before sale. |

Sure it's the original engine?

No, I can't be sure it is the original engine. However, the engine tag would indicate it is in fact a N52B30, not a N52B25. I sent a message to the guy I bought it from, but haven't heard back. I'm fine either way, I just need to know what I'm working on!
Also, why the codes? |

There should be a VIN on the block although I've no clue where. It should match the one on the dash.

Its starting to sound like someone did swap your 3stg. IM from your 330i and put in a single stage IM. If that is the case the car is probably looking for a DISA actuator signal and not finding anything, thus the codes. Can you confirm the part number on your intake manifold and cross reference it with realOEM.com part numbers from 325i's or 328i's?

Just got a text back from the guy I bought the car from. He says that he doesn't know what Disa is, but when the "dampers" went out he bought a new intake for his wife's 325 wagon and put that intake on this car. Great. Well, that explains a lot, but it sure is frustrating. So, now I have to decide...do I spend the $$ to put the 3 stage intake back in or just leave it and deal with a SES light always being on.
Remember, this car has 210,000 miles. It is in great shape, runs well (until recently, but I am wondering if the CCV has something to do with that). I have very little $$ in the car, but I also don't want to dump a ton into it. I already have the new DISA units...I would just need the intake manifold, right? |

The codes came on about 3-4 weeks after I bought the car. I had them read and erased, and they didn't come on for another couple of weeks. He probably erased the codes right before I bought it.

Is that all I need is the manifold? Bolt in my DISAs and I'm done? I have a couple to choose from for about $600 that include the disas, throttle valve, manifold, everything.
Which way is a better bet? |

I'm surprised it takes so long for the DME to realize the missing Disa valves. Are you sure nothing else has been done to the car to mask their absence?

That's a great question. I've been thinking about that all night. I found what I assume are the two wires for the DISA valves. They have caps on them and were mounted to the brackets on the intake just sitting there doing nothing. I am assuming all e90's in 2006 had the wiring as everyone says that putting the 3 stage intake in a 325 is a simple bolt on plug in. So if that's the case, if the DISA is unplugged shouldn't the computer throw a code right away? Anyone?

As far as I know, some faults (e.g. stuck vanos solenoids) are normally logged as a shadow code first which are not displayed as a light on the dash until after some time monitoring the fault. So clearing a hard fault code would then cause this process to repeat itself which takes time. It would seem as though you've fallen victim of someone taking advantage of this.
