Tyres
So I need some new rear tyres on my E92 330d and I'm just wondering what people's experience are of different tyres, I've currently got 19" Bridgestone potenza run flats.
Now I know eveyone one recommends getting rid of run flats but I've got a 160mile commute each day so it's nice to have the piece of mind that if I do get a puncture I can get off the motorway safely. So what other run flats do people have experience of and are there any better ones than the potenzas? Thanks in advance. |

Goodyear Eagle F1's get a good write up in non-runflat form, and they do a runflat version of them, so perhaps thats worth a look if you really want to retain the runflat option.
End of the day, if you get a flat on your runflats on the motorway, your not going to be able to continue your journey, so really the only difference is that with the runflats, you manage to limp off the motorway to the nearest services or exit, and without the runflats you end up stopped on the hard shoulder waiting for the AA. In reality both situations are going to cost you several hours and stop you getting to work/home. If keeping mobile is a priority, then buying a proper spare wheel and sticking it in the boot is surely the best option. |

Top four tyres in Evo mag's tyre test last month were:
1. Continental ContiSportContact 5 2. Yokohama Advan Sport V105 3. Pirelli P Zero 4. Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetirc 2. You won't go far wrong with any of these...

Just changed to michelin zp rft .... dont rate them feel wayyy too soft for the car. Have played about with the pressures but still not liking them. Had bridgestones 050's before and felt great.

If you would reconsider opting for non runflats, go for the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's and carry a repair kit around with you (inflator and gunge) so the tyre can reseal itself. They are cheaper to buy/replace than runflats, provide a much softer ride, a much quieter ride and are better for performance (runflats weigh a ton).
If you are adamant that runflats are right for you, I would recommend Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 runflats. I would have them over the Bridgestone's. Never tried the Goodyear runflats personally so I can't speak on behalf of those. I'm shocked that someone complained about runflats being too soft. In my experience, all runflats have been far too hard for the E9X range so the softer the better! At least you can cross lanes on the motorway and hit cat's eyes without breaking your spine. My 18's with non runflats are more comfortable than my 17s with runflats. |

Cheers for all the advice, I'm going to have a look at prices of them all now.
I'm becoming more and more interested in none run flats at the moment as every time I go on anything other than a perfect road surface my traction control is going crazy & the crashes & bangs make me feel sick. |

I removed my Bridgestone RFTs when I first got my car two years ago. It was the best thing I ever did, transformed the ride and handling massively. I went for Goodyears Eagle F1s too, this Saturday I'm finally getting rid of my rear RFTs as well, looking forward to further improvement.
You won't regret getting rid of your RFTs. |

Yes that's correct. The rears were practically new so I didn't want to get rid of them straight away. The fronts were pretty worn so got I rid of them which transformed the way the car felt massively. The rears will be changed tomorrow to Eagle F1s.

I have rfts all around and the rears are edging towards their end unlike the fronts which still have about 5-6mm on them. So was thinking whether to change all of them to non rfts and sell the fronts...or just buy non rfts rears. But Im not sure how that would work out to have rfts front and nonrfts rears :

For me it was more down to a budget thing, I do a lot of motorway miles which aren't really fun so I decided to save myself £250 and just tolerate the Bridgestone RFTs on the rear, 26k miles later they are down to around 3mm, so getting rid of the in time for wet weather. People say that selling part worn RFTs is quite easy, so maybe sell the fronts and get them all changed. The general trend I've found when reading this forum is that most people prefer non RFTs on their cars. I certainly can't complain about my Goodyears. |
