Rattling Noise when Transmission is in Drive (D)

I launched the car last night and when I got home, I realized a rattling noise from my car. I put the car in park and the noise went away. Put it back in drive (D) and the rattling came back. I'm thinking it's gotta be the transmission. I've tried searching to see if anyone else had this problem and couldn't find any thing. Anyone have this problem? Is my trans basically done? The car is an AT with alpina flash, also.

EDIT: Found out the car is leaking oil. I don't think it's anything to do with the transmission. I took a video of the sound too. The sound is coming from the drivers side.

Make sure none of the under body components are loose or missing fasteners.

Update: The car makes the noise while in park also. Found a little puddle of oil in my garage this morning. I've attached a video of the noise.

Get it up on all 4 via jack stands or find someone with a lift.

1. Remove front to rear under body panels, each just a number of 8mm/10mm fasterners.

2. fire car up

3. Narrow the location, use a mechanics stethoscope to pin point it. Sounds like a heat shield or part of the exhaust?

4. Does it vary with RPM ? Shift fine ? If its unrelated to rpm or load and shifts fine, then might just be something loose (suspension, mount etc)

5. Use a pry bar to lever/tension various components to see if you can stop the noise etc. (Down pipes, exhaust, and mounts or bushing that could be suspicious

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help! The downpipe bolt was loose... Tightened it up and no more rattling!

Now it's time to find the oil leak

OFHG is a common leak. I had that a few months ago. Oil got all over everything. My Indy fixed it for less than $300...been good since.

My buddy thinks his gasket is going bad on his 335i. Did you get oil all over the engine bay or just below and on the back of the bumper etc?

It was all over the shields and transmission....bc of this I couldn't tell if it was a tranny leak, OFHG or main seal. Got the least expensive one to fix. Dodged a bullet there.

Still can't figure out where the leak is coming from. There has been 2 little drops of oil in my garage the last 2 weeks. I checked my oil level 2 weeks ago and it was basically full and I check it last night and is reading about 1/4 left. So I basically lost all my oil within a couple weeks, but there's no puddles or anything. Any insight?

Take it in to a shop for a look. A must.

Quick question: I have oil all over the oil pan and under the rear splash shield under the transmission and rear of the engine, but the area around the oil filter is dry. Does this sound like the problem you had?

I can't answer that. I do know that oil was all over the place. A little oil goes a long way..My guess is either Main seal: no bueno. Tranny leak...still $500....OFHC...cheaper and the "best" leak....

Make sure you check the tranny fill opening, the cabling connection to the tranny (can't remember the name), and valve cover gasket just in case. I have heard of the valve cover leaking also (I plan replacing when I change out the gasket). All of those possible leaks converge at the same general area.
