Stelvio Pass Museum - high a top the mountain...
BIMMERPOST NEWS Stelvio Pass Museum - high a top the mountain Stelvio Pass... Kriegswege auf dem Stilfser Joch... which translates to mean... War routes on the Stelvio Pass... I have been coming to Stelvio for many years now. Not until recently did I know there was a little known war museum hidden in the back of the only bank at the summit/peak of Stelvio Pass ie: Bormio. The last time I was at Stelvio... when I discovered the museum, it was closed. But this time I managed to take a tour of the place. And report back to you guys! Nestled in the back of the local bank... which incidentally, bills itself as Europe's highest bank - at 2,760m high! The bank is called: Banca Popolare di Sondrio The Stilfser Joch (Stelvio Pass) Museum is tucked away in the back of the bank. Its still worth stopping in and and looking around. But its not very big. I don't believe it costs anything to look inside of the museum. At least the man behind the counter did not say anything to us. Its really just one L-shaped rooms with old artifacts and pictures. Also... IF you are gonna come to Stelvio... I would say come during a week day and NOT a weekend. On the weekends there are just so many bicyclist/RV/Slow cars going up/down Stelvio it's just no fun! IF you have to come on a weekend... I'd say drive the Pass either very early ~6am or after 7pm. It does get dark after about 9pm in the summer months. But after about 6:30pm the traffic really clears out and the top of the Pass is eerily empty. Trafio, Italy... Last gas station in Austria. BP in Nauders, Austria. I guess the first time I came to Stelvio was a few years back, when I heard about it via Top Gear. Since then it had peaked my curiosity. One fall September day(five years ago), I decided to drive South and see for myself! It was awesome. I remember the closer and closer I drive to Stelvio... the more exotic and cool cars I saw along the way! Its a car lovers heaven. When I came back and told some of my car friends about my journey... they all wanted me to show them the way! And so it began, our yearly European 1Addicts tours. We called it Stevio 1.0 Since then we went back once more(Stelvio 1.0) and last year and this year we have toured the Sella area. (Sella 1.0 & 2.0) I remember on that first trip to Stelvio taking everyone and leading the way... we stayed at a hotel in Nauders, Austria - but the time we got to Stelvio it was about an hour into our drive and I stopped at the base of the Stelvio Pass at a small parking area. There was only eight of us guys. One by one... we kept loosing people going across the street from this parking lot and into this big old Hotel. So in the end... we all ended up inside the hotel. At first to just use the restrooms... but then we decided to have a cappuccino and then a snack... and before you know it we had made new life long friends with a lady by the name of Francesca. Little did I know it was the start of a great friendship. Francesca runs/owns the Post Hotel in Trafoi, Italy. It is located at the Northern base of the Stelvio Pass. In the winter months (Oct/November until early June... the Pass is closed due to snow and the road actually ends just past the hotel. Or as Francesca likes to say... the world ends here! Hotel Post Trafoi 7 39029 Trafoi BZ Italy www.posthoteltrafoi.it Francesca's Post Hotel view from the hotel's terrace... Francesca was so nice to us... she won us all over and we have been coming back year after year. I've sent many people to her hotel - and she is so good to people and runs a nice clean simple hotel. I remember her telling us - how her brother Victor runs the families "other" hotel - high at the top of the Pass. In Bormio at the peak of Stelvio. I've stopped there for coffee and snacks... and met him. But it wasn't until this past July, that I finally stayed there over night. Victor's hotel is called: Hotel Perego - its quite an old building, but also clean and charming. In fact I had such a solid nights sleep there. Victor is also a nice guy... I think it's their Italian family's trait! IF anyone wants to stay there... here is the address: Hotel Perego Strada del Passo dello Stelvio 23032 Bormio SO Italy www.hotelperego.it/eng/index.html Alpengasthof Tibet... George's wurst stand... a local legend! Alpengasthof Tibet... www.tibet-stelvio.com/index_it.html Rifugio Garibaldi... www.rifugiogaribaldi.it Back to the Stelvio War Museum... I did find the museum very interesting though. Here is my little tour of the museum... I hope you like it. Here are my pics.

Epic tour and journal as always. Thank you.
Please give us advanced notice of the next tour.

Thank you for the tour, Dak. The closest thing to switchback turns here is a parking garage, late at night.

Great post and pictures. I wanted to do Stelvio in 2009 when I picked up my car at BMWWelt, but it began snowing very early that year. I'm thinking 2017 will be the year for another ED and the pass.
Thanks!

Stelvio is like the Eiffel Tower: everyone should go up once, but no one needs to go up twice. There are plenty of better passes in the area (most with fewer bikes).
Thankful I could learn this lesson from experience.

Why does George's Wurststand says "Richard's Wurststand" on the Stand itself?

I was there a couple of years back, would love to do this again in the m3. There is a trip being planning over on cutters to do the bmw fest, then onto Nuremberg and finally driving down to Monaco taking in as many of the passes as possible on route

Awesome post as always Dackel. Guess you finally made it back up after all!
Stelvio is one of those places I'd always go back to on a weekday afternoon to grab a cappuccino with my better half at the Ristorante Genziana. You just gave us another reason to, now that I know that there's a museum there. The last time I picked up one of the cycling jerseys to add to my collection. I hope to do it on two wheels sometime in the future ...and now back to my real life.

A lot of people tire of Stelvio... but every time I visit the Pass... its so breath taking, and I feel a sense of "home" there. I could do with less bicyclist and RV's trying to make it up that mountain! Another reason to go very early in the season(June) or late(September)ish.
