Interior LED lights swap gone sideways?
Car is 2011 335is. After viewing this thread by Dave4 (thank you) I liked the interior transformation, bit the bullet and purchased the same kit.
Got the lights today, so after work I started to change/swap the interior lights. Because the doors would be open, footwell lights, puddle lights dome etc would be constantly on, I hooked up the charger to the engine bay charging posts. And I started. Everything went fine, I tested the respective bulb every time I changed it, no issues. The last ones were these (rear console footwell lights - the smallest LED's in the set), and I use Dave4 pic for representation purpose: But once I removed these lights, they never lit up again, neither with LED's nor with the original bulbs, and also another pair of lights just stopped working: the driver & passenger footwell lights and both lights below the doors. Everything else works just fine. I tried to check through I-drive if there's a setting I might overlooked, but no. One note: I know I turned the "welcome light" feature off, now it was on and for 50sec? I just reset it how I know I had it. If someone has a pointer, or knows about this issue, it would save me lots of aggravation and wasted time. Thanks

I have a feeling most of the wires are connected
I did not install the rear footwell light correctly at first which led to door puddle light not turning on When everything's installed correctly, the car probably sends out a very light current when the door is opened, leading to all the lights turning on since theyre now led |

As I said, I tried it with the OE bulbs back on, and puddle lights & footwell lights did not work, as well as the rear passenger center console lights. Then I took the rear passenger center console lights out, and puddle lights and footwell lights didn't work. Not sure what's wrong.

Might be a blown fuse. Did you disconnect the assemble before removing the bulbs?

Might be putting them in wrong. I know it sounds weird but I put them in wrong multiple times and was confused then tried a different way and it worked perfect.

Do you remember how you installed them? I remember the OE bulbs were installed different than all the other bulbs. Meaning the flat insert of the OE bulb went in sideways (perpendicular) between the wedges. This is how I installed the LED's as well. My first instinct was to install them like all the other bulbs - in the wedges, and actually I did install them first like that, but the lights never turned on. Then, I changed the orientation, and again, no dice.

I put back the OE bulbs in the rear passenger console, and now all the lights work correctly. No fuse was blown. Probably my car doesn't like those tiny LED's (JK)....
I have no idea why the car shuts down the puddle lights, footwell lights and rear passenger console lights when LED's are installed in the latter? Now I am 100% sure I haven't done anything wrong concerning installing.

Try installing the LED's with the car in either sleep mode or just pull the battery.
If the vehicle detects a bulb out it shuts down specific areas of the interior sometimes. If you are still having problems with the LED themselves, consider a proven kit like HPB. Same price, more output, better fitment, higher quality, no brainer ![]() |

So this morning I used Jeff's tip to remove the battery, I changed those tiny LED's , replaced the battery. Out of 4 bulbs, only 1 was lit. So I thought these are also polar sensitive. Switched the other 3 around, and they all lit up. Problem solved. What are the odds to have all 4 reversed at the 1st install? Maybe these should be color coded so one can figure out the polarity - the wire (car) has 2 colors, so all you have to do is match polarity by tracing where the red/black wires are tied to.

We'be been here since 08
![]() Glad you got it figured out. They are polar sensitive and like I said sometimes this car turns off interior areas if it senses a fault. I always recommend my customers to pull battery or at a minimum let the car go to sleep. The car usually goes to sleep after 10 minutes. The only problem with the battery removal method or letting the car go to sleep is it's typically hard to see so a flash light is recommended. The only other problem with that method is for polar sensitive areas. A lot of customers who try to do interior kit installs end up shorting something out, typically in the footwell area. It usually blows the fuse. We blame the car for making it so difficult. ![]() ![]() |

Swap the polarity on the bulbs. If they aren't CANUS bulbs or of a cheaper variety, you may have to flip them around to get them working.

Happened to me when I plugged the LED in wrong and the system detected a bulb out and cut power to that socket until I reset the system. Took me a little bit to realize this.

When swapping bulbs and testing I just leave the window open and lock the door with the remote then unlock the car with the remote, that usually works to reset everything to turn the lights back on. |
