Got a speeding camera ticket in Switzerland...do I have to pay?
So I got a speeding camera ticket going 120kph in a 100kph zone. The charge is 115 CHF. As a resident of USA, what happens if I don't pay? Will they just dismiss it since I'm out of the country resident? Will they somehow come after me? Next time I go to Switzerland will they detain me or something?

BTW the ticket should have payment methods explained on the form somewhere. If it's wire transfer, you can also sign up with one of the online services, their fees are usually lower than a bank's.
You should pay the fine, you never know when it will come back and bite you, and if it's after years and years there will be late fees and other things tacked on... Not worth ignoring it IMO.

I think I got hit in Switzerland in a tunnel. It was one of those tiny tunnels and I was alongside a semi truck that was swerving a bit so I sped up for 3 seconds to get ahead of the truck and saw a flash... Couldn't have been faster than 120 in a 100 zone but we'll see.

Don't pay it. If you go to Switzerland maybe just don't drive. Your car had German plates. Switzerland isn't going to hunt you down or worry about 110 Swiss Francs.

Speed cameras in europe have a very low tolerance for speed. I'd suggest just paying the fine to avoid any potential issues.

I got one for going 6km over. Not planning on paying it just for the principal. The ticket said there was a 5km tolerance, so I only needed to pay for 1km over!

If you visit Switzerland frequently i'd recommend to pay the fine which is ridiculous high in that country, big difference to Germany (I work in Switzerland and live in Germany). Of course they store your data (license plate, name, address) and you're in danger of getting caught on swiss territory and have to pay the fine plus interest etc. right away in cash or they'll take away your car or arrest you.
The swiss limitation period is 3 years. German authorities will help the swiss guys to get you identified but they'll not enforce swiss law and i guess it's the same with the US. |

I got tagged in Amsterdam for 5 over, and they sure as hell don't make it easy to pay. You'd swear they never heard of Paypal in Europe.

While it may be difficult to pay, as some of the smaller jurisdictions don't even accept credit cards, plus the possibility of a language barrier, make the effort.
How much fun were you having at the time on ED? That's how I looked at it, expensive but worth it. I've had enough bad shit in my life, I don't need a ticket like that hanging over my head. Mine was $760 USD. |

Man, I love Switzerland too much to have to avoid it. I guess I'll pay it then. Thanks for the tips everyone.

Every time I see one of these cousin-bangin Saudis/Qataris driving through California like they own the place, ignoring our laws and thinking they are above our society I get pissed.
You obviously are not that big of a dick, but it's related. Follow the laws in every foreign country you visit. I got a ticket in Switzerland and paid it the week I got it in the mail.

If so, well sure....a foreign country cannot suspend your US State license, but they sure as hell can detain you at passport control the next time you attempt to enter their country. Sorry, I don't understand how this is even a question. There are a ton of threads on here that detail quite specifically how strict the Swiss are in terms of speeding. If you do the research on here, you KNOW this. I assume that OP knew this was a possibility.....you pay to play. Not coming down on you, OP, it's simple....pay what you are responsible for. Listen to what hwalk above said. I would guess that those that are advising you to not pay have either never done ED, never plan to do ED or never plan to drive in Switzerland ever. Glad to see you're taking the sage advice of others on here and pay the fine.

Note that your bank probably can arrange the wire transfer but the fees for that range from $14 to $45 bux. |

I may have got bit heading from Zurich to Stuttgart. It was in a serious speed trap going from 100kmh to near 60 in probably less than 150 yards. I think by the time I got to the actual camera and passed it I was crawling well under it but I'm not too sure what kind of range those things ticket at. |
