What happens to runflats in an accident?
A few weeks ago, my friend and I took his E46 through the foothill mountains in the bay area. Lots of great hairpins and twisty roads. Unfortunately, it started to rain and while taking one of the corners, we aquaplaned and went over a muddy part of the mountain. Nothing serious happened to his car, but his front tire was ripped out of the rims. The rim itself was slightly damaged. The car wasn't damaged at all. We just replaced the tire with the spare, and were on our way.
I can't help but wonder how my E90 would behave in this situation. In case of an accident, where the tires are damaged to this extent, would runflats still work? Not having a spare tire could be a huge problem here. Its too bad we can't find a spare or a donut that fits into that hole in the trunk.
