They'll be on tomorrow. About a week early, but it's going to be cold enough.

Winter tyres are recommended once the ambient temperature is below 7c during the day, I'm holding out for now, but it won't be long...

I find that when its wet they work well but I only have a set for the E93 so if it does snow then we are covered. So far this winter its been so mild I was thinking that we wouldn't get a cold snap!

I've just fitted mine. Mainly because the front tyres on my MV3's are awful in this wet weather (they're some awful linglong crap that the previous owner installed and wont be going back on next year)

Went with 17" steels as i wanted to try a slightly "rat" look. I think it looks pretty cool, probably a lot of folk that would hate it though! Need to sort some photos.

The predicted cold snap appears to be just a few days...for now.

I've got brand new Goodyear Eagle F1's on as well, so there is plenty of grip for now, I don't want to be chewing up the very soft winter tyres just yet, my remapped 330d is not kind on rear tyres!

Hi All,

What are everyone's thoughts on running winters on steelies rather than alloys?

Looking to get my first set of winters but undecided about what to go for, seen steel wheels with Avon Ice Touring tires for about £480 or go 2nd hand and get a set of BMW alloys rom Germany for similar with used tires on (approx 5mm tread).

I use my winter tyres on steelies, you just have to put up with the "what happened to your wheels" or "who nicked your alloys" comments

Not put them on yet though.

I think all season tyres will do for now.

Look forward to some snow for some laddish behavior in quiet car parks.

I paid 630£ for brand new tyres and good condition used BMW alloys. So if you'd be okay with used tyres would have though the price be pretty close to your 480£ quote but with advantage of decent OEM wheels, which I guess you could sell easier than steel thus recouping some of the cost.

I had some 225/45R17 winters left over from my old car, so bought some steels from here:

https://www.tyreleader.co.uk/steel-w...w/x1/18i-19830

Fits the 330d just fine, but the rear could be doing with a bit of spacing. (though thats something that applys to any "square" setup on a Pre-LCI car i guess.)

FWIW, Goodyear Ultragrip Performance Gen1's in the same size are only £90 each from the same site, and much better than the Avons. Conti TS850's are also excellent and similar price.

You'll get those tyres and steels for similar money to your Avons.

Winter tyres are also usless at much below 4mm, so no point buying some at 5.

Vredestein Wintrac arrived this morning, temp is suppose to dip below 0 this week so they have arrived at the right time. Haven't fitted them yet but 17" I think they're going to look a bit odd.

I've heard that the summer tyres are more brittle than the winters at lower temps and the rubber compound tends be chiselled away by the rough but of the road.

It's a small but gradual process...
